Can theory โ€œdo more the closer it gets to the skinโ€ as Sara Ahmed once suggested? This talk turns to the flesh of the criticโ€™s writerly self by exploring the burgeoning genre of post-imperial autotheorical writing, and the ways in which this specific aesthetic modality seeks to affectively โ€œdo moreโ€ through the body. Dr. Saroukhani will muse on a counterintuitive notion of love via Hazel Carbyโ€™s Imperial Intimacies (2019), a text that is part of a growing canon of writing in postcolonial criticism, and especially Black studies, predicated on the critical incorporation of the criticโ€™s life and body.

Henghameh Saroukhani is Associate Professor in Black British Literature at Durham University. She has published widely in the field of Black British and Black Atlantic literatures and cultures.

๐Ÿ“ข The Art of Unsilencing: Research, Testimony, and the Stories We Tell

What happens when scholarly research moves beyond the page into image, sound, and space? How do archival evidence and interviews take form as artistic practice? How can art become a way of producing historical knowledge?

Drawing on two decades of work on political violence, Lilia Topouzova will reflect with us on an interdisciplinary practice spanning oral history, archival research, documentary film, creative nonfiction, and installation artโ€”including her new book ๐™๐™ฃ๐™จ๐™ž๐™ก๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ: ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™ƒ๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ & ๐™‡๐™š๐™œ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š ๐˜ฝ๐™ช๐™ก๐™œ๐™–๐™ง๐™ž๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™‚๐™ช๐™ก๐™–๐™œ (Cornell, 2025) and her collaborative multimedia installation ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™‰๐™š๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™—๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™จ, presented at the 2024 Venice Biennale. ๐Ÿ“ข Fascism without the West? with Alberto Toscano

Join us for a discussion with renowned social and political theorist Alberto Toscano as he explores vital theories of fascism that have emerged outside, and without, the West - from Tosaka Junโ€™s account of Japanese โ€œemperor-fascismโ€ to Ghassan Kanafaniโ€™s treatment of Arab authoritarian states, from Mahmood Mamdaniโ€™s analysis of โ€œneo-colonial fascismโ€ in Idi Aminโ€™s Uganda to Sumit Sarkarโ€™s portrayal of the fascist dimensions of Hindutva.

In what sense can we speak of fascisms outside, or even without the West? And how are these fascisms shaped by the changing forms of โ€œWesternโ€ (US and European) imperialism?

Gastรณn Gordillo (Professor, UBC Department of Anthropology) will respond.

Carol Liao (Professor, Allard Law and UBC Sauder Distinguished Fellow; Chair, Canada Climate Law Initiative and Co-Director, UBC Centre for Climate Justice) will moderate the discussion and audience Q&A.

How can educators engage with AI critically, ethically, and creatively?

Join us for Appraising AI: A Student-Led Approach to Critical Evaluation, a workshop with educator and researcher Kate Greenslade.

Designed for educators navigating the possibilities and risks of AI technologies, this two-part workshop explores generative AI through the lenses of climate, racial, and social justice. Drawing on her work with students, Kate will share practical approaches for developing critical AI curricula that examine corporate interests, labour models, environmental impacts, and technical debates.

This workshop will be of special interest to educators working in the visual art and design.

The presentations will include examples of how students moved from passive to active users โ€“ including how and why some students ultimately opted out.
