The 1980 Indian Child Caravan was a turning point in Indigenous child welfare in Canada. It led to a historic agreement giving the Splatsin community full control over their child welfare programโ marking the first time in Canada that a First Nations band was recognized as having jurisdiction over their own child welfare matters. The movement sparked wider calls for self-governance and reform, and its legacy lives on through continued advocacy.
