Since 2013 Lord Kitchener Elementary School's Outdoor Classroom: Food Garden & Green Space has been In 2012, the school was seismically rebuilt.

Lord Kitchener Elementary sits at the busy intersection of King Edward and Blenheim in Vancouver. Thankfully, provincial funding provided a safe, new school structure, but unfortunately it left little for the outdoor space. The PAC Sustainability Committee saw this challenge as an opportunity to transform this noisy, dusty site into an oasis where city kids can feel connected to nature by advocating for space to develop an Outdoor Classroom. With the help of partners and a TD grant, Spring 2013 saw the installation of a food garden and natural play area, researched and designed by Kitchener students and managed by an active committee of parent volunteers. The opportunities for creative play, learning and engaging the surrounding community are endless. The Raised Bed Garden area in particular has been the nucleus for the EarthBites Curriculum. It has been a particularly valuable space for students recently, as there have not been any opportunities for field trips due to Covid-19. So much more time has been spent outside during these EarthBites classes, so the students really get to take pride seeing their seeds, seedlings and bulbs grow through the seasons. Today’s Kitchener students will leave an amazing legacy as they become our future leaders in sustainability.

The Pop Up Harvest Market was a success thanks to all who attended! Check out the bounty from today's harvest. Mr. Bruechert, Mr. Brown and Mr. Rosenbaum's classes helped harvest, wash and prepare much of the produce. Yay EarthBites!!

It's HARVEST TIME!!

When: Today, TUESDAY Sept 14, 3-3:30pm
Where: School Garden
Harvest: Leeks, Beets, Carrots, Apples, Mint, Oregano and More!
Bring: Loonies and Toonies for Donation Jar

There will be a significant harvest today in the school garden! Please join with your children from 3-3:30pm. East of the school/basketball courts.

All your donations go back into supplying the garden with seedlings, seeds and other small supplies for garden shed. Thanks for your ongoing support to keep our school garden thriving!

Watering, Weeding and Harvesting for Mini Markets is on the agenda but we need your help to keep our beloved garden thriving. Watering Demo workshop this evening Wednesday June 9th 5-6pm. radishes, apple blossoms, asparagus forrest OH MY!!!

Wildflower seed balls with the Kindergarten class this Tuesday. Half clay/half soil, roll into a ball, roll in wildflower seed mix, throw into garden and voila!!
