The Alliance of BC Students welcomes the announcement that the Ministry of Finance has initiated an investigation into the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA) under a special provision of the Societies Act.

”All BC students deserve transparency and accountability from their student unions,” said Kevin Root, Chairperson of the ABCS. “Any serious allegations of misconduct or misuse of student funds raise significant questions, and students deserve answers.”

BC student societies are regulated by the Societies Act and are accountable to their members and the public through the Act.

BC students expect their student societies to demonstrate high standards of ethical conduct, fiscal responsibility, good governance, transparency, and accountability. Upholding these high standards is the norm, and is essential to maintaining the trust that students place in their elected representatives.

On Monday Jan 19th, the Alliance of BC Students and student unions from across the province showed up to Minister of Post-Secondary Education Jessie Sunner's office to slam the government's performative review of the public post-secondary education system.

Four months is not enough time.

The 2% limit on tuition increases must stay in place.

And cuts and mergers are not the solution to decades of government underfunding.

BC students are demanding the government reverse course and commit to more public funding, not cuts or tuition increases for already struggling students.

The BC Government just initiated a review of the public post-secondary education system in BC.

The review is a farce: a ridiculously short process that puts students at risk of tuition increases, school mergers, and cuts to services.

BC students are clear: raising tuition, closing schools, and laying off campus workers won't fix our public post-secondary education system, it will destroy it.

TW: Sexualized and Gender-Based Violence

The government should call Gender-based Violence what it is: an epidemic.

Advocating for effective trauma-informed, survivor-centric public policy io increase prevention of and response to sexualized and gender-based violence on campus has been a core priority for the ABCS for many years.

We're proud to continue that advocacy alongside , , , , , and more incredible allies by signing the YWCA's open letter asking the Premier to declare gender-based violence an epidemic in BC.

In February 2023, we wrote an Open Letter to Premier Eby representing 375,000 BC post-secondary students demanding the government to urgent action on the crisis of sexualized and gender-based violence on campus. With 71% of students have either experienced or witnessed unwanted sexualized behaviours in a post-secondary setting, we are in a crisis. We need urgent action now.
