Most people don't understand the concept of leadership and thought that it is something that is given to you by someone with a superior authority. Leadership is earned and is given to you by the people you lead. Your title doesn't define your leadership ability, it only defines your authority.
But how do we earn leadership from the people? The very first thing is to relate to them at the personal level. We can't trust someone whom we don't know or relate to. We can't respect someone who don't understand us and vice versa.
This is why it is important to recognize and understand the culture, values, and traditions of the people in country that you are living in. Without the understanding, climbing into a role of leadership abroad is virtually impossible.

It's undeniable that we grow a lot faster when we live abroad. However, the result may not be obvious when we are caught up in daily routine and feel like we are not learning enough to be successful abroad.
Living abroad makes us different and being different may create a sense of insecurity that drives us to devalue ourselves and hide from our own greatness. This Infographic from www.WorktheWorld.com shows us a broad view of what we actually gain from our experience abroad. It is important to reflect on our achievement and understand the value of our unique perspectives that we can bring to the new environment or back home.
No one can benefit from a wise person who is afraid to speak up and share his or her authentic opinion. I hope you learn something from this post and feel empowered to make a difference in the environment that you are living in. @ Vancouver, British Columbia
