Q***r ASL is an anti-oppressive, trans* & q***r positive environment with a focus on creating an accessible, affordable, safer space for ASL learners.

We created the Q***r ASL program in order to offer safer spaces for q***r and transgender folks to learn American Sign Language due to the fact that many q***r and trans people can feel uncomfortable in ASL classes. Folks can end up feeling singled out, oppressed, or experience other things such as lack of access, conflict of politics, financial barriers, and so on. Q***r and trans Deaf folks ofte

It’s hard to believe that it has already been a few weeks since our team retreat. 😭😭😭

We wrapped the week up by having a Q***r ASL social at at their Q***rs & Beers event, which was an absolute blast and we’re stoked to have this perfect picture of us!

However, swipe left to see a slightly more accurate version of us all. 😂😂😂 Not too late to be taught by us in our upcoming cycle starting in a couple weeks!

Every cycle Q***r ASL makes a donation. We haven’t been too consistent with sharing who we donate to every cycle & how much but we will commit more to this for transparency and spreading awareness!

For this cycle - we have donated $500 CAD to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society. We will also match anyone’s donations up to $500 CAD. If you donate - please message us proof of your donation and we will match!

We also posted about this on Instagram - if you can share, that’d be great so we can try and get as many donations as possible.

Donate here: https://www.irsss.ca/donate

Each donation that is matched will be listed below (no names but just so folks can see how much has been donated).

(many thanks to lisa.beading for making an instagram post suggesting where we could donate to)

An ASL translation of the article: Wet’suwet’en Coastal GasLink Pipeline Dispute: Every Word You Need To Know.
Some points have been summarized.

NOTE: If video quality is bad - make sure HD is checked on.

This is an attempt of getting information out about Wet'suwet'en via ASL. We did not add English subtitles as we are linking to the article itself.

Follow the hashtags: and for updates.

Signed by Zoée (Deaf & owner of Q***r ASL) & Kirsten (hearing interpreter). If you'd like to know who we are, you can watch our introduction video:

We would love to have more people help getting information out via ASL (only Deaf people & hearing interpreters as we need fluent ASL signers). If you'd like to be a part of this - please email q***[email protected], we'd love to have you!

Transcript:

Hi, my name is Zoée (shows name sign). I am a Deaf white settler living on land that belong to Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations people. Land also known as Vancouver BC.

I have been following, learning, sharing information about Wet'suwet'en. I have noticed that there seems to be nothing about this in ASL. If I missed any, please let me know. I think it's really important to share information about this via ASL for our communities. I will ASL-ize the best I can. I found this great article that covers a lot of key words about Wet'suwet'en. I invited a friend - a hearing interpreter to support translating the article.

Hi, I'm Kirsten (shows name sign). I'm a hearing interpreter. I was born on Musqueam land (Richmond), I grew up there, and I now still live on Musqueam land in Vancouver. I'm a white settler. I'm working with Zoée on translating this article because it's important that Deaf people have access to information via ASL.

(Zoée appears again) I want to add that this article in no way covers everything about Wet'suwet'en. There is new information everyday. I think it's really important that we continue. If you - Deaf people & hearing interpreters want to be involved with getting information out via ASL - please let me know. We'd love to have you.

Email q***[email protected] if you'd like to support us translating information about Wet'suwet'en into ASL.

Side note: we could also use folks for video editing, video descriptions, transcript, etc.
