What happens when children are given the space to share what they love most?
Sometimes it's a LEGO creation. Sometimes it's a piece of music, a story, a pet or an idea they're excited about. And sometimes, it's the confidence that comes from being truly seen and heard.
That's the inspiration behind Spotlight, a new HomeLearners Network offering that gives learners a dedicated space to share their passions, connect with peers and build confidence in a supportive environment.
In our latest blog, we explore how this simple idea is helping children strengthen communication skills, inspire one another and discover new interests along the way.

At SelfDesign Learning Community, we believe something fundamental: that learning happens everywhere, that children are natural learners, and that education should be built around relationships and curiosity. 🌎🤔
This isn't just philosophy. It's practice.
Your child works one-on-one with a BC-certified learning consultant who gets to know them and their interests, strengths and challenges. Not as data points, but as a whole person.
You, as a parent, are valued as an equal partner in your child's education. Your insights matter as much as professional expertise.
Learning happens through conversations, not just assignments. Through connection, not just curriculum. At home, in the community and through experiences that feel meaningful to your child.
We're one of BC's Independent Provincial Online Learning Schools (iPOLS), which means we meet provincial standards while honouring our unique philosophy of self-directed, relationship-centred and personalized learning. 🫂
From kindergarten to Grade 12, SelfDesign Learning Community offers flexibility, support and an approach to education that sees your child as a capable, curious human being, not a vessel to be filled with information.

"If my son wants to learn a program in Python, there's nobody there saying no," says Christina Hagemann, a SelfDesign parent. "My daughter wants to learn how to multiply fractions, she can do that. She doesn't have to wait to be in the right grade."
That's what it's like to be a SelfDesign learner. Your child doesn't have to wait for permission to explore what interests them. They never have to put their curiosity on hold until the curriculum catches up. 🧐🤸♀️
Want to dive deep into coding? Go ahead. Ready to learn fractions earlier than expected? Perfect. Passionate about something the standard curriculum doesn't cover? That's exactly what we're here for!
As a SelfDesign learner, your child is learning what matters to them, when it matters to them, in ways that actually make sense for how they learn! 🥰
