New study this week showed encouraging results — young adults ages 18-24 found an average improvement in depression, anxiety, and insomnia after a 1-week period of reduced social media use. 

Instructed to stay off social media as much as possible, they on average reduced it to 30 min per day, from around 2 hours. Even that small reduction — minimal use, not a total detox — showed encouraging results. 

You can replicate this by setting timers on your own apps and on your kids apps. It’s easy to get carried away on social media. There is always something funny, quirky, or outrageous being served up to you. Time ticks by unnoticed. Setting time limits saves you time — and your mental health. 

WITHDRAWAL — Note that, since daily social media use is an addictive activity, with complete separation from social media, a person can experience withdrawal effects. We’ve all seen the reaction of young children when the iPad gets taken away. Older kids and adults go through this too. Withdrawal effects can last 2-3 weeks. This experiment would have been better, and would have shown increased benefits, had it lasted 3 weeks. The first week is the hardest.
