Colour Magic - Strategy & Intuition
A 4-Week Workshop with Harvey Chan

In this four-week workshop, Harvey Chan shares his distinctive approach to working with colour, drawing on years of artistic exploration and experience. Participants will develop a strong foundation in the principles of colour while learning practical strategies for creating vibrant, expressive artwork across a variety of subjects, including portraiture, the figure, urban landscapes, and abstraction.

Through a series of guided exercises, Harvey will introduce both analytical and intuitive approaches to colour-making. By balancing strategy with instinct, students will learn how to make confident colour choices, simplify complex visual information, and identify what is most essential to communicate their personal ideas and emotions. The course is designed to help artists gain greater control, clarity, and freedom in their creative process, resulting in work that is both visually compelling and uniquely their own.

🎨 What to Bring
We offered a drawing board with clips, which fits a maximum size of 11” x 15” pad/paper. 
Suggested art materials:

Please bring your own watercolour set, brushes ( or reservoir brush ), water container, and watercolour paper pad or sheets ( 11”x15” ). For drawing, coloured pencils ( water soluble version for dissolving effect )

A Liberating Approach to Life Drawing

Life drawing can feel intense—capturing a live model within limited time often brings pressure and self-doubt. This session transforms that experience into something fluid, forgiving, and exploratory.

Through a collage-like process, you’ll construct the figure in fragments—layering, shifting, editing, and refining as you go. Instead of fixing the composition from the start, you’ll allow it to evolve organically.

By embracing fragmentation as a creative strategy, you’ll rediscover freedom and play—moving beyond observation to build a personal visual narrative through the human figure.

Through simple exercises, you’ll learn how to use light and dark patterns to organize your drawings and paintings. This approach will help you feel more confident when composing your work, making your images clearer, more dynamic, and visually engaging—while still allowing your ideas to stay rich and expressive.

在本工作坊中，將深入認識 NOTAN 這一簡約而高效的構圖概念。透過循序漸進的示範與練習，將掌握如何運用光與暗的對比來建立清晰而有力的畫面結構。此構圖方法不僅能提升創作時的自信與判斷力，亦能令作品呈現更鮮明的節奏感與動態張力，在保留視覺層次與創意自由的同時，讓畫面更具整體性與表現力。
