✏️ The Research Exploration Opportunity (REO) offers high school students the FREE unique opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research at partner universities across Canada. The program enables students to explore the world of research, be immersed in the process of scientific inquiry, and ask questions about possible paths to this field.

👨‍🔬 Tour first-class research facilities, shadow lab personnel and attend lab meetings, seminars, and faculty presentations

🔬 Receive an introduction to basic laboratory techniques and experiments using state-of-the-art equipment

👩‍🏫 Be mentored one-on-one by graduate students and ask questions about paths in academia within various fields

🔬 STEM ENGAGEMENT NIGHT 🔬

1️⃣ Welcome to our first event of the year!

🗓 On Thursday, October 27th from 6-9 PM PST, learn about how to take your first steps into the world of research.

🍴STEM Engagement Night is free for everyone to attend, and dinner will be served

🧬 Every year, STEM Engagement Night is organized by UBC STEM Fellowship to allow UBC Science students to gain useful information from professors and PhD candidates regarding how to get involved in research, networking with industry scientists, and discovering all the available opportunities available to you as you navigate your degree.

🧭 Come find us in the Abdul Ladha Science Student Centre (ALSC) on the day of our event, and our volunteers will help direct you to our designated event area!

🙋‍♂️ Are you interested in a volunteer opportunity for a research night? Consider applying to be a volunteer at STEM Engagement Night!

🎖Volunteers will receive a written letter of recommendation as a token of appreciation!

🧬 STEM Engagement Night is an annual event tailored towards UBC Science students interested in taking their first steps into the world of research. Gain deeper insight into research from the perspective of professors and PhD candidates, learn how to network with design team representatives and industry scientists, and discover the importance of having research experience under your belt.

📝 Tasks:
- Streamline the presentation by communicating with our presenters behind-the-scenes
- Es**rt and redirect students to the event area
- Help students with registration for STEM Engagement Night
- Assist with the overall logistics of the event

⏰ The time commitment is 3 hours for the whole event, although volunteers are expected to stay behind for clean-up and/or help setup the event by arriving earlier.

Leadership and Research Opportunity

👨‍🔬 Do you want to take the lead in organizing a student-led research competition? Interested in strengthening your student leadership skills and working with a multi-disciplinary team?

💼 We are excited to announce that STEM Fellowship is hiring a new Regional Indicium Lead to takeover the UBC branch for the next academic year 2022/23!

🧪 Indicium is an annual research competition hosted at several universities across Canada. The program involves grouping up undergraduate students with little or no research experience with mentors (graduate students, researchers, professors, etc.) specializing in various STEM fields to work on an original project throughout the academic year. Projects showcased at the Indicium Research Conference have the opportunity for publication in the National peer-reviewed STEM Fellowship Journal. 👨‍🎓 We are looking for a self-driven and detail-oriented UBC student to take on the responsibility of leading Indicium UBC 2022/23. Roles will include:

- Recruitment and networking with researchers, students, etc.
- Directing a team of Junior Executives
- Planning and Hosting Events & the final Indicium Research Conference
- Managing timelines, deadlines, files, emails, etc.

🤔 Skills we are looking for:
- Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
- Confident in public speaking
- Strong time-management skills
- Organization and thoroughness
- Self-motivation

📑 Qualifications:
- Current UBC student in a STEM-related field (preferably upper year)
- Work/volunteer experience involving leadership and/or planning

We seek to enable students to learn collaboratively, express their passion and love for science, and expand the scope of human knowledge through scientific, multidisciplinary inquiry.

📢 The key responsibilities for VP OUTREACH include:
- Contact other clubs for potential collaborations in future events
- Write articles for our monthly newsletter “The STEM Hub”
- Engage high school students in STEM to assure the success of REO (Research Exploration Opportunity)

🗓 The key responsibilities for VP EVENTS include:
- Work out event logistics throughout the year
- Handle venue booking and event scheduling
- Bring innovative and fun ideas to UBC STEM Fellowship
