I drew this design when the news broke about the initial 215 babies being found in unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School. To Indigenous people this wasnāt news but now the world was finally listening. I was a new mom to an almost 2 year old baby so the news hit different and I found myself crying with deeper pain than Iāve ever felt.
I decided to make a design people can use for their profile pictures which is this design right here called āTears for the Childrenā. I was waking up at night crying because I felt so deeply affected as my Naanii (grandmother) was a residential school survivor. Usually when I am thinking about a new design I take a couple of hours or a few days, however long it takes to think of an idea. I wanted a visual representation of what I was feeling, what we were all feeling. We were and are mourning together.
The eyes in the design are hollow and empty but filled with grief and sadness. Tears are streaming down the face with childrenās faces represented in the tears. There are lines on the forehead to show sorrow we feel when we are crying.
