Back to School Tip #10:

Be realistic about your skills and find the right type of help.

All students learn in different ways and at different rates. No one can be good at everything. If you are struggling or know you need help before the year begins find the right type of help. Go to teachers, parents, siblings and if that doesn't help, come to www.mytutorstop.com to find a tutor. We have developed this site with feedback from teachers, parents and students in order to accommodate the diverse learners of the world. We have many tutors with specialties that are waiting to help you.

Back to School Tip #9:

Set rules and expectations for work.

Set up rules on when and where work will be done and make sure it is distraction free, organized and has all the supplies you need. During university it was impossible for me to work from home so I found a spot in one of the libraries that I used for many years. For younger children parents should discuss expectation for work like neatness, quality of answers and consequences for not having
the work done. My many years of teaching have shown me that students who have clear expectations and consequences from home about the quality and completion of their work usually have a more successful school year as they tend not to fall behind and give up.

Tip #8 Back to School:

Organize and Update Individual Learning Plans

If you are a student with a disability or your child has a disability, find time to organize your learning plans and update them with goals that you may want addressed this new year. Also, if you work with any outside agencies make sure the teachers have all the contact names and numbers needed to help you. Providing the teacher with this information early will help with starting the year off positively.

Tip #7 Back to School:

Introduce yourself to teachers before the school starts.

Start a collaborative relationship with your teachers right away by contacting them early. Look on school websites and syllabuses for contact information. The sooner you know your teacher and develop a positive relationship, the sooner the help comes. Discuss any issues you may be anxious about and talk to them about any adaptions and modifications you may need. Teachers are usually preparing for the year at this point and it is easy for them to accommodate you and answer any questions before they become busy with first week school stress.

Tip #6 Back to School:

Review concepts.- A few weeks before starting school go through concepts that are fundamental across all years of learning. Take some time to review and practice math concepts, read and practice your writing skills. Many students in elementary and high school lose these skills during the summer and quickly fall behind in the first few weeks of school. Practicing these skills will help them start the school year with confidence!

Tip #5 Back to School:

Go into the school the week before to find classrooms and meet with teachers. - Take a trip down to your school and familiarize yourself with important location like classrooms, offices, bathrooms, and libraries. For University students this can ease the anxiety of being late for classes and for elementary/high school students this can be a chance for you and your parents to make plans on where to meet before and after school. Also, many teachers may be in and it is a good time to introduce yourself.

Tip #4 for Back to School:

Create a "leaving space" - A leaving space may include a visual checklist of items you need to pack before you leave every morning. Make sure you pack everything you need the night before and confirm with your checklist. This will cut down on forgetting things on the days you have to rush out.
