Things have a way of unfolding faster than we can see. I wasn't blind to it, but it wasn't all bad, right? Alcoholic blackouts, trauma, job losses and relationship strains. I hurt myself and I hurt everyone else in the process.

"The link between trauma and addiction lies in the way substances temporarily alleviate emotional pain. Trauma survivors often experience symptoms such as anxiety, depression, flashbacks, or dissociation, which can feel unbearable. Substances provide a temporary escape or numbness, giving the illusion of relief."

The Little t in Trauma:
Little "t" trauma refers to smaller traumatic events that compound over time. If we notice symptoms similar to that of PTSD but lack the "big event," we are still experiencing something of large significance. This is also called Complex Trauma.
The idea of the little "t" allows us to rationalize behaviour we may not have understood, as it is a byproduct of lasting trauma. This understanding tells us our body is responding as a means of protection. Complex trauma is difficult, but awareness is the first step.

It takes work to develop our perspective and positive self-talk. Our stress response, well-being, relationships, confidence and happiness are all tied closely with how we view our world and speak to ourselves.
Some exercises we can utilize to help develop our internal dialogue:
1) Positive Affirmations
2) Journaling
3) Goal Planning
We can use these to help us visualize the person we wish to become. Our thoughts will become our world if we repeat them continuously.

"Trust is the foundation of any healthy relationship. It fosters emotional safety, encourages open communication, and creates a sense of belonging—all essential elements for recovery and healing.
When trust is broken, family members often experience feelings of betrayal, anger, or fear. Rebuilding trust requires acknowledging the pain caused by your actions and demonstrating, over time, that you’re committed to change.
Trust is not rebuilt overnight. It’s a gradual process that requires patience, forgiveness, and vulnerability from both sides. But as trust grows, it can deepen the bond between you and your family, creating a supportive environment for your recovery journey."
