Our beautiful Cecil Rhodes Elementary School at between West 14th and 15th avenues and Spruce and Alder streets was just up the street. King Ed High was just north at Oak and West 12th Ave NE corner where the Diamond building now sits. The apartment on the right is still on Oak and 15th Ave saved and kept well to this day. A three story walk up replaced the house to the north of it in the late 60s. The apartment building that curves the east side just south of it is about to come down. It has been poorly maintained for decades. The Starlight Cafe with it's music machines at each table (my Mom called it the Greasy Spoon) used to be where the Dutch restaurant is now in that building on the NE corner at 16th Ave. Max's Deli moved from the East side of Oak to its current location next to Sunshine Market on the West. Both businesses have been there for decades and each expanded to take over other storefront area. There was a gas station on the NW corner of Oak and 15th into the late 70s possibly early 1980s. Cunningham Drugs sat at the NW corner of Oak and West 16th Ave in the same building that sits there today and the IGA was on the SE corner on Oak at the lane south of West 16th Ave between 16th and 17th avenues. A beautiful neighborhood to grow up in.

Remembering Ms. McD ..Nora McDermott, our amazing coach and teacher! We dedicated the Eric Hamber Girl's gym to Nora and the students created the artwork for the walls and gym floor. The McDermott family kindly donated the funds to renew the gym floor in Nora's memory.

Cecil Rhodes sign will be removed from Vancouver school to address 'anti-black racism' 06/26/2019

Well now why is it no surprise that they are so wrapped in their agenda and those at the meeting on the 19th were so busy throwing racist comments and threats out themselves, that they chose not to hear! The Alumni and community do not celebrate or glorify the man it's their red brick school, heritage, history and archives, the staff students and community. The group of haters have just glorified him with all this attention when he never got any before..how's that working? So much for the current school that's legal name is and always has been L'Ecole - Cecil Rhodes

Cecil Rhodes sign will be removed from Vancouver school to address 'anti-black racism' The Vancouver School Board has unanimously passed a motion to remove the Cecil Rhodes plaque at L’Ecole Bilingue Elementary school.

Thank you to the Vancouver Courier for providing the information about Cecil Rhodes SCHOOL. The Board should have shown the respect.

Vancouver School Board’s Cecil Rhodes decision reveals generational divide Vancouver school trustees voted unanimously to remove a controversial sign from a West Side school June 24, but not before a generational divide seems to have split current and past school . . .

A VERY sad day in our Cecil Rhodes SCHOOL community.

They not only did not listen to us about our red brick school, it's staff, alumni and community, they have now passed the motion to not allow reference to Cecil Rhodes School so it is as if none of us or our families, those the built the community ever existed! The deplorable hatred and attacks on Cecil Rhodes School alumni at the 19th committee meeting specifically, has now been supported and encouraged. The Board should have recognized the former school, staff and alumni have nothing to do with the man and that the heritage, historical and archival piece, along with those that worked or were students, should be celebrated and not one trustee did this. Think before you vote next time!
