One day, my student asked if I knew about the tv show Rick and Morty. Yes I did. Could we play adventures in this universe? Of course we can. Bigger and meaner villains, harder negotiation situations, ethical dilema. Their character was a sane middle ground between Jerry and Rick, an average mechanic who understood quantum physics and was able to travel through the multiverse.
All that was fun and Chaotic!

When I started teaching, in 2014, I wasn’t sure how to teach French, but something I knew it that I didn’t want my students to do one worksheet after another.
I asked my class of Grades 5-6-7 how they would like to learn French. Half wanted to do a play, the other half wanted to play video games. I asked them: would playing D&D be acceptable for them? I was unanimous: YES!

The multiverse has the advantage of bringing the students into the universe where they feel comfortable, where the vocabulary is relatable. Translating the name of the dragons from the series How to train your dragon is amazingly helpful because each dragons name is basically two adjectives stuck together to describ the behavior of the beast. Adjective Chapter Completed!

From star wars to rick and morty to adult conversations
I worked with a student in French immersion for 4 years. They were 14 yo when we started and we went on a Star wars adventure. We started simple but my adventure was mostly design to play with younger students with limited vocabulary. I had to prepare more mature content at the level of their capabilities. They started Jedi but ended up becoming bounty hunter, more specifically treasure hunter. Bigger and meaner villains, harder negotiation situations, ethical dilema. We did this for 2 years.
They asked if I knew about the tv show Rick and Morty. Yes I did. Could we play adventures in this universe? Of course we can. Bigger and meaner villains, harder negotiation situations, ethical dilema. Their character was a sane middle ground between Jerry and Rick, an average mechanic who understood quantum physics and was able to travel through the multiverse.
All that was fun and Chaotic but then arrived the final year, the great grade 12. We didn’t play. It was sad and beautiful at the same time. They wanted serious conversation about the real world. We talked about their projects for the future, their dreams and fears and we found the words together to express these ideas in French.
The end.
