Huge congratulations to Vancouver Chess School coach Janak Awatramani (Canada) and Isaac Chiu (USA) on their historic victory at the WR Bughouse Championship!

Hosted by German entrepreneur and billionaire Wadim Rosenstein at the Grand Hyatt Manila, this first of its kind event featured an unprecedented $100,000 total prize pool, with the Deep Waters Team (Chiu & Awatramani) taking home a US$50,000 first place prize + trophy & gold medals.

Bughouse, a fast paced, thrilling chess variant incorporating tactical elements of Shogi demands flawless teamwork and lightning fast calculation. Awatramani and Chiu faced an elite field, including World No. 2 Hikaru Nakamura, GM Awonder Liang, and a host of world-class Grandmasters.

An incredible milestone for the global chess community and a well deserved victory for the champions!

Huge congratulations to all Team BC players and our trophy winners on an outstanding tournament. Finishing third overall on tie-breaks is a commendable result, highlighted by our historic score against Quebec. While the final round against Nova Scotia was decided by the slimmest of margins with a score of 5.5–6.5, we take this narrow loss in our stride and maintain our high spirits as we look forward to next year.

Sincere thanks to the parents and volunteers for their dedication and support throughout the event. We also recognize our Provincial Coordinator, Charles Wu, and Team Captain Nathan Wu who did a phenomenal job leading the team and ensuring our success. Thank you, Team BC, for representing our province so well.

Echo Heming Fang Sweeps Pan American Youth Championship with Perfect 9/9 Score! πŸ†

There is winning an international championship, and then there is rewriting the script on how it’s done. Echo Heming Fang, a standout student in the VCS elite Bishop class and a regular at our tournaments and camps, has just delivered a masterclass performance on the continental stage. Competing at the XV Pan American Youth Chess Championship in Sonsonate, El Salvador, Echo did the unthinkable, steamrolling through a 9-round Swiss-system tournament, with a round to spare, to finish with a flawless, perfect score of 9/9 (the only player in the entire event to finish with this score) in the U7 Girls section for which she will be awarded the Candidate Master (conditional) title.

For those who watch Echo train weekly in our Bishop class, this historic result is the culmination of immense dedication, focus, and a fierce competitive drive. Transitioning from a local favorite to the undisputed champion of the Pan Americas is a monumental leap. On behalf of the coaches, staff, students and families at VCS, we extend our massive congratulations to Echo Heming Fang and her family. The Pan American trophy is coming home!

Team BC’s training session featured International Arbiter Stephen Wright, pictured here explaining Carlsbad pawn structures, amongst other things preparing the team for the Nationals. The session also focused on adapting to delay time controls, where the clock pauses before counting down, as opposed to the more common increment format that adds time after each move. Under the mentorship of Team Captain Nathan Wu, juniors received guidance. This team training unrated tournament was ultimately won with a perfect score of 7/7 by Lucas Yao, whose conditional FM title is now imminent.
