On August 1, we observe Emancipation Day, commemorating the day the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into force across the British Empire.

Emancipation Day is an opportunity to reflect on and recognize the strength, achievements, and perseverance of Indigenous and Black peoples in Canada, who endured and resisted centuries of enslavement. It is also a time for settlers to listen to Indigenous and Black communities whose lives continue to be shaped by the lasting impacts of enslavement.

Vancouver PNW Climate Week 2026 kicked off at Langara with one big idea: climate action doesn't have to feel heavy.

Ralf Nielsen (TransLink), Aaron Joe (Salish Soils), Elizabeth Dunn and Jiaying Zhao, and Seth Klein joined a welcome from Elder Gail Sparrow to talk about what's actually moving the needle, from green bonds to composting to just bringing more joy into the fight.

Langara College is celebrating $250,000 in new funding for its first GenomeBC-funded applied research project, “Biodiversity on Tap.”

With UBC collaboration and Applied Research Centre support, the project will characterize B.C. wild yeast strains and support the development of a first-of-its-kind B.C. wild yeast platform to advance brewing innovation and industrial biotechnology while expanding opportunities for students.

Thrilled to celebrate Langara Film Arts’ strong presence at the 11th Run N Gun Film Festival.

Film Arts graduates, faculty, and program coordinator Jonas Quastel attended the July 4 screenings and awards, with Langara well represented across the festival as performers, producers, directors, and judges.

A special congratulations to alum Hudson Williams, a former Run N Gun filmmaker, who returned this year as a festival judge. His role is a testament to the impact Langara alumni continue to have in the film industry.

Langara was also proud to support emerging talent through the Best Youth Film award, which recognizes filmmakers under 18. Congratulations to all the young creators, and thank you to Run N Gun for championing independent storytelling.

Last week, snəw̓eyəɬ leləm Langara College held the closing ceremony for this year's Writing Lives class.

Writing Lives pairs Indigenous and non-Indigenous students with residential school Survivors to document their personal histories. Over two semesters, students study Indigenous literature and the history of colonization, learn interview and transcription skills, then work directly with Elders to draft and workshop their memoirs. At the closing ceremony, those memoirs are given to the Elders to keep.

This year, two Elders received their memoirs: Louisa Smith (Xenaksiala) and Murray Smith (Ts'msyen), a married couple from Prince Rupert celebrating 67 years together.

Thank you to Louisa and Murray for their trust. Thank you to our students Rachel Litt, Letitia Lim, Steve Desabrais, Amie Bernaerdt and Darren Bernaerdt for the care and rigour they brought to this work. And thank you to instructor Jill Goldberg, who leads this program with real dedication.
