Last week, our Grade 5 students embarked on their first outdoor education experience of the year. At Camp Fircom, the students enjoyed playing field games, canoeing, learning survival skills and practicing mindfulness. They even spotted some whales while out on the water!

We love seeing our students getting their hands dirty, trying new things and bonding as a class. Thank you Mr. Maloney for capturing these wonderful moments!

Our Grade 7 Girls Volleyball team showed off all the skills they've been learning in their Dig It Tournament on Friday, October 2. The team brought great enthusiasm and support for each other throughout the day, and we're so proud of their sportsmanship and progress.

Coach Moffat says, “The girls are settling into their roles quite well for the early part of the season. We cannot wait to see how they continue to grow.”

"When I started in 2016, much of our school was new: new building, new leadership and we were still getting to know the IB programme. We were young, fresh and had great room for growth."

Mr. Addley became Head of School in 2016 and has seen SJS through some major milestones, such as the creation of the Arts and Science Centre, the Junior School renovations, and joining Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). Now, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary this year, he looks forward to enjoying this milestone with the community.

"A great 40th anniversary will be when people across our community, the parents, students, teachers and alumni all come together to appreciate it. I hope there is a fond remembrance of this year, for our community to say, 'Wasn’t it nice that we got to come together for the 40th.'"

Is it hot in here, or are our Grade 8s chemistry skills on fire? 🧪🔥

As part of their Methods of Science unit, students learned how to safely use the bunsen burner and adjust between the heating flame and safety flame. They were then tasked with uncovering the identity of unknown metals using their flame colour.

Throwback to when our buildings were joined into one!

As part of our 40th anniversary we are revisiting some of the major milestones and celebrating the important people who helped get us where we are today.

In 2019, thanks to the incredible ongoing support of our community, the Arts and Science Centre was created to join the Junior and Senior School buildings. Here we take a walk through some of the photos from that construction period:

Ron and Karen, whose sons Donovan and Hudson attended SJS, were major supporters of the school and gave name to our rooftop garden.

The Atrium is always full of excitement when the Eagle's Nest Used Uniform Sale is happening!

We were especially impressed with the leadership shown by your Grade 5 students, who researched climate change and led a school-wide Sweater Day campaign! We also loved how sustainability is woven within your curriculum, with students regularly exploring environmental issues through inquiry-based learning and taking meaningful action in their communities. The Grade 1 waste reduction unit was another standout example of powerful environmental learning, helping students connect everyday choices to larger environmental impacts!"

Yesterday was the first day of school for our JK to Grade 10 students 🎉 The morning was buzzing as students found their new classroom placements and locker assignments. A big SJS welcome to the new students and families who joined our community this September 👋
