Shihan Coleman trained here before the OH.

In 1997 we opened as Sadhana. Later we added the O. He never left.

He's been on our mat since I was pregnant with our twins. Our kids have never known the dojo without him in it.

Swipe. 2026, back in Japan, still drilling. Check his hakama on slide 2. 佐渡花会. Sadohana-Kai. The OG.

Then 2014, KoKoDo Osaka Taikai, with Sohanshi Michael and our son.

12 years between those photos. Same man. Same heart.

That's the part people miss about a dojo. It isn't a gym membership. It's family.

Discipline isn't a burst of motivation. It's showing up when nobody's checking. He drills. He trains. He yelps. He comes back. Then he does it again. For 29 years.

Most people chase the next belt. He chases the next class.

That's budo. That's true heart.

Never tell a Japanese TV crew your favourite sport is sumo.

A camera crew stopped us in Asakusa with 1 question: what’s your favourite Japanese sport?

Sohanshi said sumo.

Next thing we knew, the crew whisked us off to a youth sumo club, and he was in a mawashi on a clay dohyo doing shiko beside kids half his age and twice as flexible. (Slide 4. That leg isn’t his.)

Then he had to wrestle them. 4 bouts. 3 wins. 1 draw.

46 years on the mat. 8th degree black belt. The bouts didn’t humble him. The warmup did. Shiko. Suriashi. Matawari. Low hips, heavy base, rep after rep before anyone touches anyone.

Those kids aren’t warming up. They’re drilling the curriculum.

Most BJJ players rush their base to get to the sweep. Sumo won’t let you. That’s how one of those kids held him to a draw.

Omedettou Gozaimasu to both Jason Overy and Paul Kravec for testing and getting promoted to the rank of Yondan last night at sadohana in . It was well earned with 2.5 hrs of waza. Many many years in making. Thank you to Soke and all the Shihan that helped get these men ready. Now we get ready to start working Godan tomorrow:)

A fantastic weekend over at Mihama Dojo with Shihan Ali and the crew. Beautiful dojo and beautiful people. Thank you 🙏 for the hospitality and good mat time and social time. The meat on a stick was next level. If you want a great group to train jujutsu with on the Sunshine Coast look these guys up.
