For years, we have been warned that AI and other technological advances will wipe out millions of lower-paying manufacturing jobs.
But a UBC Sauder study shows that, at least historically, businesses will opt for labour over investments in innovation... as long as the price is right.

AI's growth is reshaping our lives - and putting real pressure on our electricity grids.
Large data centres require enormous amounts of electricity. As more facilities are proposed in B.C., how can the province support growth while maintaining grid reliability during periods of peak demand?
In his latest blog post, Associate Professor Werner Antweiler explores whether "mandated flexibility" could be part of the solution: https://bit.ly/43AG9xL

What does it take to launch Uber for Business in an entirely new market?
For Wilson Lin (UBC MM '18), it meant moving back to his home country of Taiwan and building market presence from scratch, managing complex high-level stakeholders and navigating it all without a pre-existing roadmap.
The UBC Sauder Master of Management program gave him the foundation to take that leap, and three skills that still shape how he works every day:
- Strategic thinking to offer creative solutions in rigid environments
- A relationship-first approach to sales that goes beyond transactions
- The global collaboration skills to thrive in multicultural corporate structures

Earlier this year, the Spitz Centre for Indigenous Business Education at UBC Sauder concluded its inaugural Indigenous Stewardship Project Management Program, a 16-week journey combining Indigenous knowledge systems with specialized project management training.
With 39 participants from 18 First Nations across British Columbia, the program supported critical land and water protection initiatives and was backed by over $100M in conservation investments. The final weekend was a powerful culmination of learning and collaboration, with presentations on co-management agreements by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, stewardship of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, and legislative tools for conservation outcomes from the BC Government.
“For me, the highlights of the program were networking with different Nations. We all have this connection to the land, and when we come together, it gets stronger. For anybody, at any stage of their IPCA journey, this program is a valuable resource.” -Kia Jules, Land Officer/Tmicw Coordinator, Natural Resources Department at the Simpcw First Nation
By fostering partnerships and building capacity for intergenerational stewardship, participants are advancing Canada’s biodiversity goals, including conserving 30% of lands and waters by 2030, and creating lasting environmental impact.
