These lovely folks, along with beautiful demo dog Butter, recently attended Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid with Pet First Aid Seattle, a division of Metro Dog Seattle.

Our Seattle team have been offering WNW courses in Washington State for over a decade, and also teach OFF THE GRID! The instructors are a warm group and often collaborate to teach together. We are grateful that they are so committed to helping educate their community.

The Seattle team is currently discussing their Fall schedule and will have course dates available soon.

In the meantime, if you’d like a private course in or near Seattle, or want to waitlist, you can reach the instructors via: https://metrodogseattle.com

Something for us to keep an eye on from here in Canada as well. We are a global community now and both pets and livestock are too.

UPDATE 6/10/26 at 11:10 AM ET: USDA/APHIS has modified its list of species restricted from traveling to Mexico amid the New World screwworm response. Pet dogs are no longer included on the restricted list and may travel to Mexico under previously established procedures.

Restrictions remain in place for other affected species, and dogs entering the U.S. from Mexico still require screwworm inspection/certification.

Original post below:
‼️USDA-APHIS has halted the export of pet dogs and several other animal species to Mexico amid confirmed United States New World screwworm detections.

Veterinary teams should continue monitoring for suspicious wounds, educating clients, and reporting suspected cases to the appropriate animal health authorities.

Today was Day 1 of the June 2026 Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid Zoom instructor course!

This session we have candidates in attendance from 4 provinces. Each of them delivered fabulous presentations on some unique topics, and together, we all learned a lot.

The candidates have now completed 8 hours of their training and will be back in class again tomorrow. We can’t wait for them to finish up and start offering courses in their communities.

Wish them positive energy in their journey moving ahead; they are all doing incredible so far. 🐶🐱⛑️🧑‍🏫

Did you know that over the years, Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid has expanded efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle? ♻️

That’s right, here are just a handful of the things we do to protect the earth:

Product purchases:
We purchase many recycled and eco-friendly products. A few examples are the paper for our printers and our Certificates, and “green” bubble wrap made of partially recycled plastic.

Reuse:
Whenever possible, we ship our Instructors’ supplies with reused packaging and packing materials. That’s right, they never know what their boxes will look like! 👀
They might not be pretty, but they do the job. We’ve saved hundreds and hundreds (maybe more!) of boxes from being produced with this practice.

We also collect gently used items each year to distribute to various pet charities.

And last, the majority of our teaching supplies are cleaned and reused from class to class.

Reduce:
We make every effort to create as little waste as possible and use as little energy as we can in our business practices. We purchase products in bulk to reduce packaging and make every effort to try to recycle anything left over. To conserve energy, I even use a skylight for natural light above my desk!

Buy local:
We work with many local suppliers to obtain our supplies. This reduces our environmental footprint since the product travels a shorter distance.

Our commitment to community isn’t just to pets, it’s to the earth! 🌎

Sincerely,

Lisa Wagner, Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid

Tonight I ended up trying to help a friend whose puppy ate a kid's vitamin containing xylitol. Simple accident: kid dropped vitamin, puppy scarfed it down. (Note: this household is knowledgeable and is xylitol free, but a relative bought the vitamins, unaware of the risk to the dogs.)

The puppy only ate *one* vitamin. Which turned out to contain 1500 mg of xylitol.

100 mg/kg is the threshold for hypoglycemia which can be fatal. At 500 mg/kg, hepatic necrosis occurs -- destruction of liver tissue.

So just ONE chewable vitamin ended up creating a serious problem for a 30 pound pup (which is not quite 14 kg).

The emergency vet induced vomiting. Thankfully, the puppy had had a meal and so there was food in her stomach. In the vomit was the orange tablet, identifiable though dissolved.

Quick thinking on the owner's part (including grabbing the bottle of vitamins) and fortunately a nearby 24/7 emergency vet hospital meant that this pup received prompt treatment, and should make a full recovery.

Check your medications, vitamins, gum, candy, toothpaste, mouthwash, peanut butter and more for xylitol, also known as birch sugar.

This is useful information to have on hand:
https://www.calculatorsfordogs.com/health-nutrition-calculators/xylitol-toxicity-calculator

ALWAYS contact vet and ASPCA Animal Poison Control center immediately!

As for everyone (the non-vets) recommending the use of hydrogen peroxide, please update your understanding:
https://www.gsvs.org/woodbridge-nj/blog/hydrogen-peroxide-for-dogs-emergency/

Pass this along. I hope you never have to use it.
