This practice of believing in and belonging to myself changed how I love who I am.
It all started with the mirror exercise. Looking myself in the eye, saying affirmations or singing songs to myself so I could love myself. It felt silly at first and hard, because I didn't believe what I was saying to be true. I was so weighed down under what others thought of me, that I didn't think I was worthy of being loved.
With compassion and patience I continued to practice daily. Before long my body was responding, my posture was up straight with shoulders back and a surety in my step.
Please join me Thursday July 11 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm for a Mirror work experience that will leave you full of love and gratitude and confidence in leading your life.

Is it taking more effort to remain motivated during this time of year?
The fall through to the spring is a challenging time for me. It's when I feel Dysthymia the heaviest. Dysthymia is a persistent depressive disorder.
The ebb and flow can be frustrating. Our inner critic tells us that we aren't physically capable or that we slow others down. Maybe, you've been cancelling meet ups, appointments because you just don't have the energy/capacity to have conversations.
Here are 3 things that help me when I'm feeling this space.
Loving Discipline: loving self talk, compassion, reminding me that I am worthy of the rest my body is asking for.
Living space: this is our sanctuary. It's set up for you and what your needs are. Is it warm, cozy and soft? Is it easy to maintain?
Supports: those you have around you are they helping you move forward or have they faded out of your life. Reach out to those that are there for you, even if it's your doctor.
These 3 tips have been instrumental in maintaining my well-being and my hope in sharing this will help you see that you are worth the effort to take care of yourself when feeling depression this time of year.
Let us know in the comments below two things that you do that help you through the grey gloomings.

3 Steps for Getting through Triggers
I’d like to talk about “triggers”. I see the miss use of this word all over social media. It’s not a trend nor to be dismissed. It refers to a traumatic muscle memory response. For many living beyond PTSD survival coping habits developed to protected us…until now. Oftentimes into adulthood, these habits present as barriers in some situations.
Relearning or retraining the brain takes commitment to being a better version of yourself and living your values. I have made mistakes along the way, and I have gotten stuck in the PTSD and reacted instead, AND I haven’t let those “failures” deter me from rising, thriving and conquering a life of well-being that promotes staying well.
At the point of losing your s**t and trust me you will want too, this is the opportunity to change, the point of recovery. So, adjust the girls, take a deep breath, and allow that emotion the space to be, while RESPONDing from a better version of yourself.
Triggers are external events or circumstances that invoke symptoms in you. Examples of triggers are excessive stress, difficult financial situation, or family friction, bullying and harassment. Early warning signs of triggers are internal, for example attaching to thoughts, tight chest, shallow breathing, feeling trapped.
Our power is in taking the following 3 steps for Getting through Triggers
Step one: An important thing to focus on when triggered...is your breath. 4 square breathing is affective in regulating our nervous system. Taking 3 or 4 deep breaths brings us out of emotion mind and back into our wise mind.
Step two: Get your body moving. Dance to your music, go for a run/walk, do yoga, go the the gym. Whatever makes you move your body, even if its only one song...that's 3 or 4 mins of movement do that 10 times a day and you get the 30 mins recommended exercise.
Step three: Check in with yourself. Create PEACE
1. Physical Health: did you take care of your needs?
2. Eat: have you nourished yourself, hydrated?
3. Avoid substances: drugs or alcohol or any other vice that numbs
4. Charge Battery: Sleep hygiene
5. Exercise: 20-30 mins of activity

Creating a Practice of Gratitude
I grew up hearing the phrase "count your blessings". I didn't really understand it, I didn't know what blessings were.
In 2014 I was introduced to a practice called G.I.S.T. ( Gratitude, Intentions, Support, True Statement) by Lorie Corcuera. This technique cultivates self love and motivates the 5 Key Concepts of Recovery.
Gratitude's...simply...are things that you are thankful for. It can be as simple as being grateful for toilet paper or having shampoo or food in the kitchen. Doing this shifts our brain from seeing what we DON'T have to what we DO have. For example, I'm grateful for new glasses so I can see the world around me and read a good book.
Intention's are things that you personally want to work on such as listening to our body, learning emotion regulation, finding your flow. For example, my intention is to take small daily steps like drinking more water, eating healthy snacks to restore my well-being. If your intention is to get the deep rest you need that's ok too, as long as you don't get stuck there.
Support, what or who will support you in acting on your intentions? For example, The support I need today is the be held accountable to myself in order to do that I need a friend to check in with me.
True Statement is something that is true about you. For example, today I am energized for the day. if you aren't feeling to energetic that's ok too.
Depression and anxiety was something that I had battled with for years. Having a gratitude practice has played a key part in pulling myself out of the darkness of depression.
Jim Carey defined depression as deep rest. What a radical concept! I realized that depression was the body's way of asking for REST! This sparked my hope and in turn I took responsibility and practice my G.I.S.T daily.
Do you have a gratitude practice, share one thing that you do in the comments below.

2 Tips that are my go to's to remind me on the tough days or when I'm caught in the undertow.
Tip 1: Having a Wellness Box.
Common tools:
Talk to a friend/mentor/coach
Go for a walk in nature
Dance to music
Colour or Arts & Crafts
Meditation
Yoga
Hot Bath
Items for sensory needs such as soft, squishy, feathers etc.
If you have exhausted your list, thinks of things that spark you. Maybe explore what you find value in.
Tip 2: 3 Steps for Personal Inventory
Step 1:Describe yourself when you're feeling well. Are you focused, joyful, humorous? Are understanding?
Step 2: What are things you need to do everyday for yourself to keep you well? Such as eating healthy meals; staying hydrated; hygiene; sleep; exercise
Step 3: Things you choose to do
Like, learning a new skill ie cooking, baking, painting.

4 Things I did to make "isolation" my friend.
The fall of 2019 I had radiation treatment for a benign brain tumour that caused mind crushing migraines.
In the months leading up to treatment date, I was reassured that I would have support during that time. Was I naive or what!
The first thing I did was take myself out for a Starbucks coffee then a trip to Indigo to get myself a new book and mug that says "Good Morning Beautiful"
Spending that afternoon rumbling with acceptance of where I found myself and who IS there for you, like my brother. I found a ddetermination that drove me to get those five weeks.
The second thing I did was make my bed cozy and comfortable. I was going to be spending alot of time there for the next few months.
Third thing I did was purposefully practice gratitude's. I'm so grateful to have my boys (my dogs: PJ and Jackson) they were and still are my greatest comfort. Having them house trained was a life saver as those that said they would help me walk my boys didn't step up when the time came.
The fourth thing I did was allow myself to grieve all the loss all the what was, what could've been's. The loss of "friends", family (yes even family); the goals and plans I had. The "now what am I going to do?" and the "how am I going to get the help I need?" went through my head as well.
In allowing the release, it made room for what followed....healing and self love.
You see solitude is a time of deep rest. Hibernating is natural, especially at this time of year. During this time you get to know yourself to create a plan to regain your health.
