June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to reflect on the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. 🪶

It is also an opportunity to recognize the leadership, knowledge, resilience, and community-building that continue to strengthen Indigenous communities today.

Indigenous Nations and organizations are advancing self-determination, strengthening governance, stewarding lands and resources, preserving language and culture, building businesses, and creating opportunities for future generations.

Here in British Columbia, Indigenous leaders, administrators, finance professionals, and community members continue to build capacity, share knowledge, and create lasting impact in their communities.

At AFOA BC, we are honoured to support and work alongside those helping build stronger futures through leadership, learning, and collaboration.

This month, we encourage everyone to take time to learn, listen, reflect, and celebrate the many contributions Indigenous Peoples continue to make in our communities every day.

What will you do to celebrate Canada's rich Indigenous history and culture? Leave a comment below!

Good financial planning is about more than budgets and investments. 🏦

It’s about helping communities prepare for the future, navigate change, and create long-term stability for the next generation.

One thing we value at AFOA BC is bringing together people who genuinely care about sharing knowledge and supporting Indigenous communities through education and experience.

Thank you to Gord Holley of Humanity Financial (humanityfinancial.ca) and long-time AFOA BC Board Member for continuing to contribute to conversations that help strengthen financial understanding and community capacity across B.C.

These conversations matter because strong financial knowledge helps communities make informed decisions with confidence.

When leadership changes, do the systems stay strong?

This question matters more than most people realize.

Thriving Nations are built not only by strong leaders but also by governance systems that support continuity, accountability, communication, and long-term planning.

This carousel touches on a few of those ideas, and we also shared a more in-depth blog post for those wanting to explore the topic further.

Stepping into leadership is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. 😓

Many Indigenous leaders, administrators, and finance professionals are expected to quickly navigate:

• governance
• budgeting
• reporting
• community priorities
• difficult decisions
• growing expectations

Often with very little time to fully prepare.

One thing we hear often through AFOA BC’s workshops and programs is this:

You are not expected to know everything immediately.

Leadership is something people grow into through learning, mentorship, community, and experience.

That’s why spaces where people can come together to ask questions, share knowledge, and support one another matter so much.

Behind every thriving Nation are people continuing to learn, adapt, and grow for the benefit of their communities. 🌱

Join AFOA BC as we support current and future Indigenous leaders in building the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead.

Thriving Nations are built on strong financial leadership structures. 🌱

AFOA BC’s Indigenous Financial Management Certificate Program (IFMC), delivered in partnership with Langara College, is about much more than learning numbers and reports.

It’s about helping Indigenous finance professionals, administrators, and future leaders build the confidence and knowledge needed to support informed decision-making within their Nations and organizations.

From budgeting and financial planning to governance, accountability, and long-term community growth, these skills help leaders better understand how resources are managed, how opportunities are evaluated, and how sustainable futures are built for the next generation.

What makes this program especially meaningful is the community built along the way. Participants are learning together, sharing experiences, supporting one another, and growing both personally and professionally.

We’re incredibly proud of everyone choosing to invest in their learning and step into leadership roles that make a real impact in their communities.

This is what capacity-building looks like. 👏

There’s something powerful about Indigenous professionals coming together to learn, grow, and share knowledge with one another. 🌱

AFOA BC is proud to support our Program Coordinator, Candise Johnston, as she takes part in AFOA Canada’s Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator (CAPA) certification program alongside a cohort of Indigenous professionals from across the country. AFOA Canada CAPA Program.

Programs like CAPA help strengthen skills in governance, administration, communication, and leadership, helping support the important work happening within Indigenous organizations and communities every day.

What stands out most is the sense of community built through shared learning and lived experience. Investing in education like this helps carry knowledge forward and supports the next generation of Indigenous leadership.

We’re excited to see Candise continue growing in her role and bring that knowledge back into the work we do at AFOA BC! 💫

Good governance is often judged by what people see. 👀

A productive meeting.
A clear decision.
Leadership that communicates well and follows through.

But behind those moments are the systems, structures, policies, and processes that help Nations operate with consistency, accountability, and confidence over time.

In AFOA BC’s latest blog, we explore why governance is not just about individual leaders. It’s about creating systems that support leadership transitions, protect knowledge, and help communities move forward with clarity and continuity. 🌱

Because thriving Nations are not built on a single person. They are built on the foundations that carry leadership forward for generations.

Why does the Indigenous Financial Management Certificate (IFMC) matter? 📚

In this clip, our executive director, Wendy Ham, explains why this program is such an important part of AFOA BC's work - and the role it plays in building strong financial leadership within Indigenous communities.

It’s more than learning accounting principles. It’s about developing the confidence, knowledge, and decision-making skills that support Nations in planning, managing resources, and shaping their own future.

We’re proud to deliver this program alongside our education partner, Langara College, and to support participants as they step into roles that make a real difference in their communities.

Hear Wendy talk about what this program means to her and how exciting it is to watch people going after their goals to excel in finance and advance their Nation!
