At Native Education College, wellness is part of the learning journey.

Our Athletics & Wellness activities give learners opportunities to move, connect, recharge, try something new, and build healthy routines alongside their education.

Throughout the year, learners can take part in activities and supports including basketball, yoga, Walk/Run Club, classroom fitness, open gym, archery and bow carving, physiotherapy, massage services, health goal-setting, wellness conversations, dental hygiene services, Leisure Access Pass support, sports tickets, and our Women’s Support Group.

What makes NEC unique is that learning goes beyond the classroom. We create opportunities for learners to strengthen their wellbeing, connect with community, and find activities that support them in ways that work for them.

Join us this Wednesday for Lighting the Fires: Centering Our Nations Through Cultural Stewardship.

This week’s conversation will explore Words Matter and consider how the language we use shapes communication, awareness, and our understanding of the residential school system.

Words carry meaning, history, and responsibility. Together, we will gather around the fire to listen, reflect, share knowledge, and deepen our understanding through conversation.

We invite community members, learners, NEC staff, teachers, advocates, Indigenous organizations, grassroots leaders, and others working alongside Indigenous communities to join us.

Join us this October for Lighting the Fires: Centering Our Nations Through Cultural Stewardship, a weekly gathering grounded in conversation, learning, reflection, and connection.

We invite community members, learners, NEC staff, teachers, advocates, Indigenous organizations, grassroots leaders, and others working alongside Indigenous communities to gather with us each Wednesday evening in the Fireside Lounge.

Throughout October, conversations will explore:

Oct 7 - Words Matter- Why do words matter in communication and awareness in
understanding the residential school system?

Oct 14 - Crime of Genocide and the Forced Removal of Indigenous Peoples’ Children -
What is genocide?

Oct 21 – Collective Healing from Genocide – Reversing the Denationalization of our Original Nations (Please note: This gathering will take place from 6:30–7:30 PM)

Oct 28 - Accountability for Truth Telling – What is the truth?

Through a cultural stewardship lens, we will come together to listen, share knowledge, deepen understanding, and strengthen connections with one another.

Native Education College honours Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, their families and the generations who continue to carry their stories.

The truths, experiences and teachings shared by Survivors deepen our understanding of this history and speak to the strength of Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.

For nearly six decades, Indigenous education has been at the heart of NEC’s work. We continue to create space where Indigenous knowledge, cultures, identities and ways of being are respected, strengthened and carried through generations.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation provides us an opportunity to honour Survivors, families and communities while recognizing the lasting and intergenerational impacts of the residential school system.

Every day, we honour Survivors. We remember the children. We listen to the stories that have been shared. We continue to learn from the truths entrusted to us.

At NEC, we remain committed to supporting Indigenous learners and creating space for Indigenous knowledge and voices to guide our work.

Today, our NEC family came together for Orange Shirt Day to honour residential school Survivors, remember the children who never came home, and stand alongside their families.

Learners and staff spent time making cedar roses, weaving, beading, and creating crafts. Cedar brushing, drumming, and songs were part of the day, along with food shared in community.

We are grateful to our Elders-in-Residence for their presence and guidance, and to everyone who shared their knowledge, prepared food, or helped bring us together. These moments give us time to listen, learn from one another, and care for each other.

As we leave today’s gathering, we carry the responsibility of truth telling beyond a single day.
