The Surrey School District is refusing to come to the table to discuss solutions for offering Band 7 once again. Students and community members are frustrated. Please lend them your voice and speak up for music education by coming to the Surrey District Education Centre on May 13 at 6:30pm. Bring your instruments!!!

Fred Penner was a choir kid in his school experience. He gets it. Music makes a difference. Greater Victoria School District

03/30/2026

Fred Penner, beloved Canadian icon and musician, voiced his concerns and opposition to music cuts in our province by asking SD61 to “find whatever funding is needed to maintain music in the schools.” I hope the SD61 decision-makers listening! In his words “Never underestimate your ability to make a difference in the life of a child.” This happens by keeping ALL music options in schools.

This message put together by the incredible Michael Buble, Sarah McLaughlin, BBNO$, and Nickelback last year as our province faced unprecedented music cuts remains a poignant message today. SD61 decision-makers, I hope you hear this message loud and clear.

SPEAK UP AGAINST CUTS TO MUSIC ED IN SD61

Once again, SD61 in British Columbia is proposing significant cuts to music education funding in Greater Victoria middle schools.

Now is the time for us to come together and advocate for our students who stand to lose so much if these programs are reduced.

It seems that this all-too-familiar tune that we hear at this time of year, year after year, is on repeat once again. Music program cuts are on the table to deal with School District deficits. This time the Greater Victoria School District is proposing these cuts again despite the Herculean efforts of the GVTA members led by Cindy Romphf and Karin Kwan a few years ago and the overwhelming community message that cutting music is not an option.

We support and stand by the GVTA music teachers, parents, students, and administrators opposed to these cuts and offer any and all support to them in their fight for music education.

Posted here is also the letter sent to the official trustee, superintendent, and secretary treasurer of SD61 by the BCMEA. Please join the Facebook group “Save SD61 Music Programs” for the latest information and to show your support. Please also consider writing a letter to the SD61 decision-makers to express your support for music education and opposition to the cuts. There are letter templates on the Save SD61 Music Programs page that you can copy and paste.

Let’s use our collective voice to support music education in SD61 and oppose these cuts.
