Wood Science PhD student Amanda Johnson develops Grasstic, a plastic materials alternative made from agricultural waste advancing biobased solutions to the climate crisis. Amanda is a member of the Advanced Renewable Materials lab at UBC.

Congratulations to Dr. Taraneh Sowlati who has been named a fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS). 😀👏

The designation is testimony to Dr. Sowlati’s significant scientific advancements within the field of wood science. For more than a decade, her primary area of research at UBC Forestry has been on forest-based biomass utilization and optimizing all aspects of its supply chain.

Beautiful work by our students in the BEST 304 course (Bioeconomy Technology Lab)! 😍 The students learned how to isolate cellulose nanocrystals and make iridescent films with a 3.5% CNC suspension that was air-dried. Then they used the CNC films to create artsy epoxy keychains 🗝👏🏻

Ellingsen Woods mills and processes fibre from within the Cortes Community Forest, which is managed through a partnership between the Klahoose First Nation and the Cortes Community Forest Cooperative.

Community forests are am innovative form of forest management that generates economic, social, cultural, and environmental benefits for local communities, the province, and the environment.

Dr. Emily Cranston Awarded NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship | UBC Research + Innovation Award is in recognition of innovative contributions to the fields of wood science, chemical and biological engineering.

Attention Wood Products Processing Students and Alumni!

Throughout the life of the WPP program (now more than 25 years old) we have never really been able to come up with a very good defining image, logo or design for our marketing materials which truly captures what the WPP program is all about.

We thought – who best to come up with some good ideas than those who are actually in the program, experiencing it first hand – that is our students and alumni!

So we are announcing a WPP Program image design competition. We would like to be able to use the design in presentations, websites, social media and brochures. Entries can be produced in graphics editing software or sketched by hand (and then scanned or photographed for submission).

The submissions will be judged by a panel of faculty and staff, with the following prizes to be awarded.
1st prize - $400

2nd prize - $200

3rd prize - $100

The deadline for submissions in December 17, 2021. Please submit your entries to [email protected] with the subject line “WPP Design competition”.

Congrats Professor Saddler 🥳😃

UBC Wood Science would like to offer sincere congratulations to Dr. Jack Saddler who is the recipient of the 2021 Researcher Award from the BC Bioenergy Network. The inaugural award ceremony was held on BC Bioenergy Day.

Dr. Saddler, who served as the NSERC Industrial Senior Chair and Task Leader for the IEA Bioenergy Task 39, has been recognized by the Network for his many leadership contributions to advancing bioenergy research within the province of British Columbia.
