Check out this website by UBC Medical Students designed for medical students on the impacts of climate change and health!
Do you feel climate change is important but are unsure how best to apply this to clinical practice? Look no further than our new website on climate change and health!
We have been fortunate to be a part of Global Health Initiativeโs Climate Health Team to compile the relevant research on what we understand so far about the intersection of climate change and health. As a team of four UBC medical students, we have explored how climate change disproportionately impacts different populations and the specific health threats facing BC. We have also taken a critical look at how our healthcare system contributes to climate health. Finally, we have conceptualized the benefits of connecting with nature and the reasons why it is important to protect our environment for our own health.
If you have a free moment, please take a minute to read through our modules. And donโt be afraid to tell us what you think! We have an anonymous survey for providing any feedback ๐
Sincerely,
Keiko, Montana, Sarah and Lise

During my residency, I worked with Orbis and the Virtue Foundation to provide medical and surgical eye care for patients in Cameroon and Mongolia. I also helped with wet lab and didactic teaching for ophthalmology residents and other allied eye health professionals. In between trips, I stay in contact with my international colleagues to discuss program development and teaching opportunities to help deliver high quality eye care to patients in need.

Before medical school, I spent a year in the Netherlands where I worked as an eye bank technician, enucleator, and research associate at the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery. This was my first exposure to ophthalmology and eye care delivered outside of Canada. Improving or restoring eyesight is an incredible service that I feel honoured to be able to provide for patients. It can truly be life changing for patients' ability to perform daily activities and overall quality of life. I was fortunate to be invited on global health missions during my residency. I gained insight from local patients and physicians about how to help improve the local delivery of healthcare, as well as helped to provide teaching, medical care, and surgery.

I spoke with other physicians who had traveled abroad on medical missions. It was helpful to hear about their previous experiences, their thoughts on the differing needs in various countries, and their insight on how to provide support on different levels. This often extends beyond helping with teaching programs and hospital services. It can include public health awareness campaigns and meetings with government officials.

Take the opportunities to participate when they arise! Seek out programs in your particular area of interest and talk to colleagues who have supported global health initiatives before you.

Hello everyone! For our latest Physician Profile, we are thrilled to be presenting Dr. Videsh Kapoor, the Director of UBC Global Health! Please read on to learn about her experience in global health and advice for students.

My focus has been primarily in global health medical education and establishing sustainable partnerships with low resource communities to improve health outcomes through prevention, education, and screening. As the global health theme leader for the undergraduate medicine program, I advocate for global health education integration into the curriculum and as the cofounder and faculty supervisor of the Global Health Initiative, I facilitate and supervise students involved in several project partnerships both locally and globally, including refugee and climate health initiatives. I also direct the Global Health Enhanced Skills programs for family medicine residents which is an extra 6 month training focused on global health education, scholarship, and advanced clinical skills.

Growing up in an an immigrant family and in rural BC increased my awareness of health inequities both locally and globally. As a family physician, it is apparent that so many of these inequities impact health outcomes of your individual patients as well as the health of the community they live in. Just being a medical expert isn't enough and what I enjoy the most is the holistic approach and partnership with patients and communities to empower and enable changes to impact health outcomes. I love working with medical students as well as those from other disciplines who inspire me with their ideas and innovative thinking.

Mentorship by other physicians who have dedicated their time and efforts to global health activities, attending conferences and mostly online courses have been helpful. Spending time in the field with local community champions brings humility and a focus on where I need to enhance my learning. I wish I had more time to attend more formal training programs, but maybe in the future.

Read, study, learn about topics that interest you within the range of global health. Participate in projects where you remain accountable to your partners for the longterm and continuously evaluate what you are doing. Be aware of your own power and privilege when you are working with low resource and/or diverse communities.
