Over this school year Hastings has participated in meaningful reconciliation work in partnership with the Eagles in Spirit Society, a local Indigenous-led initiative co-founded by a Hastings parent.

The George Leask Memorial Project is a collaboration that supports the carving and raising of a monumental memorial pole at Burrardview Park — a site with a painful history connected to a former orphanage, now being transformed into a place for healing, learning, and remembrance.

This fall, students and staff participated in a powerful Truth and Reconciliation learning opportunity connected to the project. Following Sarah’s presentation at our Truth and Reconciliation Day assembly, 13 classes signed up to visit Burrardview Park to learn directly from community members involved in the initiative.

Teachers and students shared extremely positive feedback about the experience, noting how welcoming, knowledgeable, and engaging John and the team were. Classes have also been invited to return on days when the carver is present to continue helping or observing.

All Hastings classes, families, and community members are warmly invited to attend the upcoming pole raising. If you choose to join, please consider bringing an offering of gratitude.

The Reconciliation Committee is a collaboration between the PAC, our Indigenous Enhancement Worker, the administration, and the community. We welcome participation and initiatives from all Hastings parents. Please reach out to Meg Shaw at [email protected] you are interested in joining us.
