When would you use them?

To be country specific, a resume is the standard application document in the US and Canada. A CV would, most of the time, be used when applying for a job internationally or for applying to an academic position. Whereas in countries like the UK, New Zealand and certain European countries, using a CV is the norm. However, it is understood that a resume is the equivalent to a CV.

By asking yourselves the following questions, it may help you decide when to use a resume vs. a CV:

1. What type of work are you applying for?
2. Where is this work located?

Resume vs. CV, what’s the difference?

What is a CV?
It is a comprehensive document that describes your full academic and professional accomplishments. Your achievements are usually set out chronologically. There is, generally, no word limit - it could very well be that the more experience you have, the longer your CV.

What is a resume?
It is a document that summarizes you career history, skills and education. Here, you may share your education and extracurricular experience i.e., include your grades.
