There is a possibility of complete power outage in the lab today. We are closing the facility until tomorrow. We expect our electron microscopes to be up and running by 11:00am.
UBC BioImaging Facility
The UBC BioImaging Facility is the largest provider of Electron and Optical Microscopy on the UBC Vancouver campus.
We would like the research community to think of us an extension of their own labs.
After 16 months of COVID-19 and other changes, we are excited to welcome Dr. Naoji Yubuki back to UBC as the newest staff member at the BioImaging Facility. Naoji brings a wealth of experience to the research community, and will be focusing on TEM processing techniques, training, and imaging.
With the recent easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we are looking forward to seeing more clients in the facility. There will be some minor administrative and logistical changes, but we are continuing forward much the same, with masking and physical distancing still in place. We will be able to have more users in the wet lab space, so please be aware of your surroundings, and double check the calendars for availability. We are very much anticipating a fuller re-opening in the near future.
It's been awhile since we have posted, but we are still here! We have new staff, and new equipment coming this fall/winter. We hope to begin working on a cryo/CLEM workflow over the winter of 2021/22.
Our Cressington 208HR sputter coater needs to take a trip for servicing. We'll be packing it up and shipping it out the middle of next week. If you need to coat some samples, let us know so we can book you in Monday or Tuesday.
We will have no ability to sputter coat samples until the coater is returned to us.
It's been awhile since we updated you, but that's because not much has changed.
We are pleased to let you know you that we have received permission to go back to the facility next week to prepare for a soft re-opening in June.
We are still working out details in terms of the numbers of people we will be able to accommodate, and how we'll be handling bookings. While we will be able to take in projects for users, and the instruments will be available for use by experienced users, we will NOT be doing any new, one-on-one or group training for some time.
Please stay tuned.
Stay healthy. We hope to see you soon.
Out of respect for the health and safety of our staff, students, and users, we will continue to remain closed in accordance with UBC's curtailment of research and teaching, We will re-open when it is deemed safe to resume our activities. In the meantime, BIF staff are working from home and may be contacted through their UBC email addresses.
Our Tecnai is now the proud recipient of a new HT tank. Work is progressing to get it running again.
It has been just under four years since we moved from our old location in the Biological Sciences Building, and we are pleased to announce that next week, January 27th-31st, we will be moving back into our recently renovated space. We anticipate some inevitable delays as we get resettled, but expect to have the majority of the facility's equipment installed and operational during the week of February 3-7th. Thank you for your use of the facility We are looking forward to seeing you again in the basement of the North Wing of Biological Sciences, 6270 University Boulevard.
Given the current and forecast weather, the Botany Department is closing at 2:30pm. We are following suit. We will reopen at 9:00am tomorrow morning, weather permitting.

Unexpected ‘Germline’ Plant Cells May Shield New Generations | Quanta Magazine To avoid passing on new mutations to offspring, plants seem to minimize the number of divisions by the stem cells that make flowers and seeds.
