Ep. 1 🏮 Ready to make your own lantern?

Tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival, so today is the perfect day to make your lantern! 🌕✨

In our last episode, Bob Sung from A Wok Around Chinatown A Wok Around shared the symbolization of Chinese lanterns and why they’re such an important part of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The start of the cathedral series...

It all started in Feb 2026.

The past few years I haven't really worked on a series, more experimenting with glazes, different one off pieces and even going back a little to sculptures.

A few of my students this year wanted to try pierced pots and double wall vessels so we've been experimenting with those techniques all year.

I forgot how much I LOVE carving and there's been a lot of ups and downs with figuring out how to make the whole process efficient.

I think I'm close to getting it and have learned a lot along the way, I'm setting a goal to make this a prominent collection for the Eastside Culture Crawl this year!

With the help of my students, they suggested better tools, I figured out the best clay composition to carve, how to glaze more efficiently and I even bought some unconventional tools to help with plotting the design.

I saw quite a few cathedrals in Ireland which really seemed aligned with this style.

I’ve always loved making things with my hands.

Growing up, my hands were always busy, making dumplings with my grandma, helping my dad repair things around the house, and learning along the way that there’s something really special about making things yourself.

There’s a kind of joy that comes from taking something simple and turning it into something real.

A piece of clay becomes a cup.
A sheet of paper becomes a book.
A blank canvas becomes a painting.

And maybe the most magical part is that you can actually see a little bit of yourself in what you’ve made :)

In a world where we do so much with a tap or a click, I love slowing down, getting my hands dirty, and creating something from scratch.

That’s what I hope to share at Chu Chu Chinatown, the simple joy of making something with your own two hands. 🤲✨
