Effective June 26, 2026, Ontario has replaced its previous OINP streams with a new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, marking one of the biggest changes to the province’s immigration system.

Here’s what you need to know 👇

❌ The previous OINP streams are no longer accepting new applications.

⏸️ The Expression of Interest (EOI) system is now closed, and no further invitations will be issued under the old streams. Existing EOIs that have not received an invitation will be withdrawn as the system is updated.

✅ The new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream includes:
• TEER 0-3 occupations: Minimum CLB 6 + qualifying Ontario work experience
• TEER 4-5 occupations: Minimum CLB 4 + qualifying Ontario work experience
• Self-employed physicians registered with the CPSO

💼 A qualifying job offer from an Ontario employer is now required for all pathways under the new stream.

📅 The application portal is expected to reopen later this summer.

If you had an active EOI or were planning to apply under the previous OINP system, your immigration strategy may need to change.

⚠️ Your work permit has expired. IRCC has not yet made a decision on your extension. Your employer is asking whether you are still legally authorised to work. What do you do? 🇨🇦

This is the situation maintained status — formerly known as implied status — is designed for. If you submitted a complete extension application before your permit expired, you are generally permitted to remain in Canada and continue working or studying under the same conditions while IRCC processes your application. Your status does not end the moment your permit date passes. It continues until a decision is made.

What you can show your employer is your expired permit together with your acknowledgement of receipt from IRCC confirming your extension application was submitted. That combination confirms your authorisation to work has not lapsed.

If maintained status is lost, you have 90 days to apply for restoration of status. During those 90 days you cannot work or study. Restoration is not automatic and approval is not guaranteed.

IRCC has proposed changes that could reshape Express Entry, including a new high-skilled immigration class and the possible removal of FSW, CEC, and FST ⚠️
