The vast majority of clinical faculty at the UBC Department of Family Practice are family physicians, but did you know that the DFP also has many allied health professionals amidst our preceptor ranks? Dr. Sophia Capo is an optometrist and a preceptor with the UBC Department of Family Practice. She has taught Family Medicine residents and learners eye care skills since 2024. In this Q&A, Dr. Capo shares with us her experience of how allied health professionals and family physicians can work together to support the needs of patients. "Being a general practitioner means that you need to be constantly listening and adaptive from one patient to the next...And the idea of social accountability, which is essentially ‘being useful’, at the level of the individual physician, be they generalists or specialists and so on is, I think, a reflection that we can be useful, we can be useful in different ways, and we need to be useful."
Dr. Bob Woollard is professor emeritus at the UBC Department of Family Practice. A previous department head, Dr. Woollard has extensive national and international experience in medical education, social accountability of medical schools, ecosystem approaches to health, and sustainable development. UBC Medicine researchers are leading two new federally funded training programs to strengthen Canada’s biomedical research and innovation capacity.
Supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) CREATE program, these initiatives will prepare students and postdoctoral fellows to tackle some of the biggest challenges in health:
🧬 One program, led by Dr. Stefan Taubert, will unlock the biology of aging using advanced multi-omics approaches to better understand why we age—and how to help people stay healthy, longer.
🔬 A second program, BioHuMS, led by Drs. Sarah Hedtrich and Govind Kaigala, will train researchers to use biodevices and human-based model systems to accelerate drug development.
