This summer, I am thinking about the kind of educator and leader I want to return as.

My goal for the year ahead is to be intentionally balanced.

As teachers, we are so used to showing up for our students, our colleagues, our communities, and everyone who needs us.

But do we always show up for ourselves?

We should.

Balance is not about doing less. It is about returning to the work with more clarity, steadiness, and purpose.

This is part of my SteadyVoice summer series on educator reset, teacher craft, and preparing for the year ahead with intention.

What is one goal you are setting for yourself before the new school year begins?

Summer always feels like the educator’s deep breath.

After a full year of showing up, adapting, caring, planning, managing, communicating, and giving so much of ourselves to our students and school communities, I think we deserve a real pause.

But I also love that teaching gives us something rare: the chance to begin again.

A new year.
A fresh room.
A renewed sense of purpose.
A chance to ask, “what do I want to carry forward, and what am I ready to leave behind?”

This summer, I am thinking about the teacher I want to return as in September.

Not perfect. Not overworked. Not trying to be everything to everyone.

Just clearer, steadier, and more connected to my craft.

New Vision’s has committed to the development of a complete, bespoke learning suite designed specifically for their organization, their people, their homes, and the residents they support.

This is the kind of work that matters.

When an organization invests in professional learning at this level, it says something powerful about who they are. New Vision’s clearly cares deeply about all of its stakeholders: the residents under its care, the families who trust them, the supervisors who lead the work, and the more than 750 employees across Nova Scotia who help create safe, values-based, enriched lives every day.

This learning suite will support staff and leaders through customized training in Positive Behaviour Support, person-centred practice, leadership, and fire and life safety. More importantly, it will help strengthen a shared language, a shared standard, and a shared commitment to what we might call The New Vision’s Way.

I’m Josh, a Vancouver based teacher, coach, and curriculum designer. Through Steady Voice Consulting, I help individuals and organizations communicate with clarity and confidence in writing, speaking, teaching, and leadership. I work in person in Vancouver and online worldwide.

I did not grow up as someone who naturally took up space. I was bullied. I had a stutter. Confidence came later through theatre, student leadership, and educators who believed in me before I believed in myself.

Theatre changed me. Not because it made me louder, but because it gave me a safe place to practise being fully myself. That understanding, that confidence is built rather than bestowed, led me into education and continues to shape my work.

I am also a father to a son on the Autism Spectrum. That experience deepened my belief that communication is not one size fits all. Growth is not linear. Every person and every organization has its own rhythm, strengths, and way of processing the world.

That is how I work.

With individuals, I meet you where you are and build a practical path forward.

With organisations, I listen first. I study culture, language, and pressure points. Then we design something that fits. Bespoke training, curriculum, and systems that reflect your people and your goals. Not a template. Not a trend. Something built with care and intention.

Whether I am coaching one person or supporting a team of hundreds, the approach is the same: Clarity. Respect. Steady growth.
