At PIRS, we believe in learning through play! While mothers take our English classes, their children are taken care of by our Pop-Up Childcare teachers, who focus on creating open-ended and play-based activities for the children. “Painting, creating, and playing give children, especially those who have experienced trauma, the chance to express themselves in creative ways. They don’t feel pressured or judged. When children paint, it shows us how they feel, and sometimes, they will start talking about how they feel.” - Chelsea, PIRS Pop-Up Childcare Worker

Did you know that yesterday was the Canada-Wide Day of Action on Childcare? This is a cause that PIRS is dedicated to through 1) providing migrant women affordable childcare, and 2) training and employing migrant women as Early Childhood Educators (ECE). We’ve compiled some information about BC’s Childcare Chaos, the importance of accessible childcare, specifically for migrant women, and PIRS’ programs and services:
🌻Migrant women face additional barriers (cultural, financial, settlement, and/or mental health). Accessible childcare is critical for migrant parents' personal and professional development, reducing their isolation, and for preparing their children for school and life in Canada.
🌻56% of immigrant women work in 5C occupations. Affordable childcare would allow migrant women parenting-career balance and the ability to pursue more opportunities.
🌻Newcomer women experience disproportionate levels of unemployment and underemployment, and the childcare system's quality depends on well-educated Early Childhood Educators (ECE). PIRS offers ECE Pathways, a low-barrier child care training program for immigrant and refugee women (ie. no or low cost, CLB 5 minimum requirement for work-related English language support, child care during class time).
