I know you want to skip straight to the good stuff. I get it.🎶
But warming up your voice before you work on expanding your range is non-negotiable.😅😅😅
Your voice is a muscle. And just like any other muscle, it needs to be stretched before you ask it to do heavy lifting.💪🏼
Low AND high. Five to ten minutes of lip trills, scales, humming or gentle singing. Every time.🎹

Sing With Jill
Hi I’m Jill! I am a vocal coach based out of East Vancouver. I offer in person + online lessons!
Offering in person, online and digitally recorded singing lessons for all styles and abilities.
So we have tested how low you can go… but now let’s see how high you can go! If you are practicing consistently, try this out a few weeks from now and see how far you get!👏🏻🎉🧡
How low can you go? Vocal range tests are a fun and easy way to test your range! Try this out and in a few weeks come back to it and see how you’re progressing! 🖤
YOU HAVE TIME TO BREATHE! This warm up will help you work on air control and finding the right spots to breathe. 🧘
And a gentle reminder, when you DO take that in-breath, you want it to come into your lower belly (and not a shallow breath into your chest). Imagine the air falling into your lower belly on your in-breath - gently and easily - no need to force it. 💨
If this is something you struggle with, drop your questions below and I’ll help you out! 🧡🎤🧡🎤🧡
Do you completely collapse at the end of a line when you’re singing or find that you gasp when you inhale? 🫢
If you do, you’re likely having trouble controlling how much breath you let in or out! 🫁
Try this – put one hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach. Take a big inhale and exhale on a “shh”. Notice what happens with your stomach and your chest. 🤫
Your belly should be expanding and your chest should stay neutral! Do 4–5 of these before you start singing and you’ll find it so much easier to control your breath! 🧘
I have a micro course called Big Bold Breath that helps you get your breath in so you stop running out. Check the link in my bio under “Learn to Sing at Home.” 🎵 🎤 🎶
Happy singing!
✨ Mindset & Nerves ✨
What if nerves weren’t a stop sign… but a little spark of magic? 🚦
That fluttery, shaky feeling? It usually makes us freeze or want to run - but next time, try seeing it as a green light instead. A sign that something exciting is about to happen. 😆
Take a breath. Lean in. Let those nerves turn into energy, curiosity - even a bit of wonder.💭 🪄
I’ve written more about this in my latest blog - come take a peek and tell me what you notice in your own experience:

The coles notes version on how to handle emotion:
Come to your next practice with more permission to feel whatever shows up. 🥰
Let yourself go there. Find your slowest, deepest breath as best you can. Keep going. Rinse and repeat. 😍
How do you control your emotions when you sing? 🎤
If you feel the tears start to come, how do you harness that energy to keep the song going? 😢
I think the answer is going to be different for each person, and I am very curious to know if you have a strategy. 🔍
For me, I have learned that I just need to go there more. And by go there, I mean I rehearse and let myself feel all the feels as often as I can - so that when I’m in the actual moment of performing the song, I am comfortable with the emotions coming up. 🧡
I have learned how to work with them and I’m a firm believer that emotions are a SUPER POWER and that we shouldn’t keep them hidden. I’d love to know YOUR thoughts...❤️
Do you hear the difference?!
The sound that we create wants the easiest way out and if we’re not creating space for it to get out it cannot only feel hard to get out but also not sound the greatest!
So when you were singing, ask yourself what is happening in my mouth! Is it open? Are you clenching? Where is your tongue? Simply being aware of what is happening with your mouth while you sing will dramatically improve your singing!
If you are on your singing journey and you want to learn more tips just like this, check out my course “The Basics” - link in my bio.
