The Vancouver School Board has changed the names of Macdonald, Begbie and Crosstown elementary schools and are working on Lord Roberts and David Lloyd George.
More than 20 additional schools have been proposed. Errors have been made in understanding history, giving new names and excluding people from the process.
Our petition asks all governments in BC to halt renamings and develop a more transparent and inclusive process.
Please sign if you agree. https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/renaming-and-removal-in-british-columbia/

Full Public Process for Name or Landmark Change 04/01/2022

Full public process for Name Changes and Landmark Removals.

Vancouver School Board has decided to change the name of Sir Matthew Begbie school to wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm.

There are several problems with this which have been caused by the lack of a full public process.

Tom Berger who inaugurated aboriginal title into Canadian Law with his victories in landmark cases has written a report to the Law Society of BC arguing that Begbie was the most enlightened of his time and accusations against him are based on a misunderstanding of the law at that time. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission specifically rejected name changes and landmark removals as being harmful to Reconciliation. The School Board is doing an injustice to the thousands who participated in this 6 year Canada wide process when it claims it is doing this in the name of Reconciliation.

The Board chose names in one language despite the fact that a judge in 2003 indicated these schools are in the territory of another language group. This has created unnecessary tensions and suggests that the city is taking sides in land claims issues. Not enough attention has been given to students with learning challenges(another school name is šxʷwəq̓ʷəθə).

While schools were requiring enormous efforts to keep students learning, valuable administrative time was allocated to changing names, ending gifted students and honours programs and removing liaison police officers from schools which also did not receive adequate public input.

A solution to this is to make sure all name changes and landmark removals go through a full public process where all the information can be considered.
If this concerns you, please sign our petition to ask that before any names are changed or landmarks are removed, a full public process will be completed where all citizens can participate.

Full Public Process For, Name Change And Landmark Change.

The Vancouver School Board has decided to change the name of Sir Matthew Begbie School to wək̓ʷan̓əs tə syaqʷəm .

There are 3 problems with this. There has not been a full public process. The accusations against Begbie are false as described in Tom Berger’s statement to the Law Society. Tom Berger inaugurated the concept of aboriginal title in Canadian Law and has done more than anyone to support native rights. The School Board chose a Musqueam name for the school when research provided to a 2003 court indicated that this is Squamish territory. This has created unnecessary friction in sensitive relationships.

A solution to this is to make sure all name changes and landmark removals go through a full public process where all the information can be considered. If this concerns you, please sign our petition to ask that before any names are changed or landmarks are removed, a full public process will be completed where all citizens can participate.

Full Public Process for Name or Landmark Change 03/17/2022

Why are the names of our streets, parks, schools been changed and landmarks being removed?
Some people are calling for this because historical figures have said or done something that have offended them.

Presentism is judging the past with the values of the present.

Some claim they are doing this for reconciliation. In fact the Truth and Reconciliation Commission specifically rejected this as harmful.
Do you believe changes to our public places should be made only after full public process?

Please sign our petition and support our efforts to ensure that we treat our history respectively and fully discuss in public the merits of changes before they are made.

Safe Sirens 03/16/2022

Please join us on Friday March 18th 4 - 5 pm for a Safe Sirens Zoom session where we will discuss ways to advocate for reduced siren volume and frequency without compromising safety and service.

RSVP [email protected]

Loud and frequent sirens in urban areas can seriously reduce the quality of living of residents. But studies show much of the noise does not make emergency trips quicker, increases erratic driving and harms the mental health of residents, especially children.
Cities like London, New York and Chicago are taking action by reducing decibel levels, changing to a two-tone European siren, and permitting sirens only when there are obstructions.
When an emergency vehicle is the only vehicle on a bridge at 3 o’clock in the morning, there is no reason for sirens blaring at 120 dB.
You can influence siren policy by joining the Safe Siren Coalition at

Safe Sirens The Safe Siren Coalition is working to minimize the negative impact of loud sirens, especially in high density downtown areas that experience multiple sirens per hour, day and night. Safe Siren Protocols are drawn from the best practises of large cities around the world; primarily New York, Chicago....
