Exercise of the Month: Standing Hip Abduction

This month’s exercise is standing hip abduction: A simple movement that can make a big difference when it comes to hip strength, balance, and everyday movement.

This exercise works the muscles on the outside of your hips, especially the gluteus medius, which plays an important role in keeping you steady while standing and walking.

Strong hip muscles can help with:
• Balance and stability
• Walking and everyday activities
• Keeping your pelvis stable during movement
• Reducing your risk of falls
• Staying strong and mobile as you age

How to do it:

1. Stand tall beside a sturdy chair, counter, or wall for support.
2. Keep your toes pointing forward and gently engage your core.
3. Slowly lift one leg out to the side, keeping your upper body nice and tall.
4. Pause briefly at the top (3-5 seconds)
5. Slowly lower your leg back down.
6. Repeat on the other side.

Try: 8–12 repetitions on each side for 2 sets!

A little tip: don’t worry about lifting your leg super high! Focus on keeping the movement slow, controlled, and comfortable.

As always, exercise should feel challenging but not painful. If you experience pain or aren’t sure whether this exercise is right for you, check in with a qualified healthcare professional before starting something new.

Not sure what to expect at your first kinesiology appointment?

Your first visit is all about getting to know you, how you move, and what your goals are. We’ll assess things like mobility, strength, balance, and overall function, then create a plan that’s personalized to your needs.

Every step is focused on helping you move and feel your best.

And parents, keep the movement going after school with outdoor play, walks, bike rides, games, or a quick dance break! 🌳🚲⚽
Movement doesn’t have to feel like a workout -> play counts too!

Hi! I’m Mikayla, a Registered Kinesiologist with a passion for helping people move better, feel stronger, and get back to doing the activities they enjoy most.
My interest in movement started through dance, and over the years it grew into a career focused on improving health, function, and quality of life through exercise. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing ongoing pain, or simply looking to move with more confidence, I’m here to help.
I believe exercise should be individualized. Every person has different goals, abilities, and challenges, which is why I take the time to create a plan that works for you.
A few things about me:
• Registered Kinesiologist
• CSEP Certified Personal Trainer
• Dance instructor
• Lover of staying active and spending time outdoors
• Always excited to keep learning and growing in my profession
I’m looking forward to sharing movement tips, injury prevention strategies, exercise ideas, and a behind-the-scenes look at life as a kinesiologist.
Thanks for being here—I can’t wait to connect with you!
