On this day in 1️⃣9️⃣1️⃣8️⃣, Albert “Ginger” Goodwin died near Cumberland, B.C.
Ginger was a coal miner, union leader, a vice-president of the B.C. Federation of Labour, and a fierce advocate for the rights and safety of all workers. While resisting conscription into World War One, he was targetted by a member of the Dominion Police.
His death outraged the labour movement and provoked the Vancouver General Strike, the first of its kind in Canada.
Ginger is one of the most well-known labour activists in the country’s history.
