September contest winner 🏆 Beatriz

One of my first thoughts when I finally made my dream of going on an exchange come true was that I’d have to spend one of my favorite dates far from home: my birthday.

It happened on September 18th, a Friday, and by Monday I was already thinking about how I could celebrate it outside my comfort zone… and everything turned out so well!!

1- My host parents made my day so much better. They asked what I wanted for dinner, baked a cake so we could sing “Happy Birthday”, gave me presents and, most importantly… made me feel at home.
2- My parents sent me a gift even though they’re thousands of kilometers away.
3- And last but definitely not least, my friends from all over the world surprised me with the sweetest picnic in the park.

I honestly think that day changed not only my age but also my whole exchange experience. It’s not easy to leave your bubble and move somewhere you’re not used to. And when you meet people who are willing to welcome a teenager into their home, friends who know exactly what it feels like to be lonely, and people from your own country who love you and support your decision… you just know you made the right choice.

One of my most memorable experiences during my first days in Canada was the Senior Sunrise at my school. In Spain, we do not have this tradition, so I thought it would be a really interesting experience to take part in.

I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning, which was definitely not easy, but I went with an international friend and I was really excited. We went to a football field near a park, where many seniors were already waiting for the sunrise. It was extremely cold, but luckily, my friend gave me a blanket!

The school had prepared signs for the seniors, and we took lots of pictures together while waiting for the sun to come up. Watching the sunrise with so many people from my school was a really special moment. It was also a great opportunity to talk to people I had not met before and make new friends.

Afterwards, going to class was definitely a little difficult because I was exhausted, but I still think it was completely worth it. I found it funny that waking up so early to watch the sunrise is a school tradition, because it is something I had never experienced in Spain.

I would definitely do it again, and I would recommend other international students to take part in it, even if waking up at 5:30 a.m. sounds crazy!

I’m Laia, and I’d like to tell you about one of the best days I’ve had since I arrived here in Canada.

It was orientation day at Bayside Camp; it was a wonderful experience for so many reasons. For starters, the people who organized the event were really kind and they also helped us meet more people and make new friends all over Halifax.

They organized a lot of activities for us, and you could choose the one you liked best to do with your friends.

To kick off the activities, my friends and I chose to make Canadian bracelets. Then we went canoeing, which was a wonderful experience because the lake was so beautiful, and the instructor, who was very friendly, taught us how to use the paddles. It was really nice. And finally, we chose to go swimming. They set up a trampoline and slides on the lake, and it was so much fun. Even though it was a little cold, we had so much fun that we spent almost an hour in the water jumping and sliding down the slides. Even though the trampoline was a little slippery and we fell a lot, it had been a long time since I’d laughed so much.

And finally, they built a bonfire and gave us s’mores. They were delicious, and it was an experience that most of us had never had before

It was a wonderful day, and I’m so grateful they organized this activity for us.

Svea from Germany, punched her ticket to track and field provincials after placing 4th in hurdles at Regionals. Svea represented Avon View well and ended up placing 8th overall at provincials. Congratulations Svea, what a great accomplishment!

A group of NSISP Homestay Coordinators are experiencing life as an international student! For ten days they are living in Japan, with host families, attending school, and experiencing everything they possibly can!

Getting to school looks a little different in Kyoto!

During the fam tour, our coordinators got to experience a “normal” school commute for many local students - biking to the station, hopping on a train, transferring to a bus, and finishing with a short walk to campus.

It was such a great reminder of how everyday life can look so different from what we’re used to in Canada - and how much there is to learn from experiencing another culture’s daily routine.
