FIRE & COMMUNITY — WHAT A WEEK!
Our final week of summer camp at The Discovery Den was everything we hoped it would be — and then some. Fire & Community definitely lived up to its name.
We had campfires going almost all day, every day, and the kids got to experiment with all kinds of campfire cooking. We roasted the classics like s’mores, thanks to one of our wonderful camp friends, but also corn on the cob, hash browns, sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot dogs, peaches and popcorn. There was something pretty special about watching the kids cook, share, problem-solve and enjoy food together around the fire.
We even learned how to make charcoal using tin cans in the campfire, giving the kids a chance to explore some of the science and history behind charcoal making.
And of course, camp wasn’t just about fire.
We spent plenty of time at the creek catching frogs, having water fights and doing our very own water dances. We ran through the maze, caught butterflies and grasshoppers, explored caterpillars and mushrooms throughout the forest, learned whittling, played imaginative games and even set up a zip line.
The kids worked together to support one another through new challenges and unfamiliar spaces.
But perhaps my favourite part of the entire week was watching the community happen so naturally.
We had lots of familiar faces and lots of brand-new faces, but you would never have known it. These kids were so kind, welcoming and respectful of one another.
The older kids included the younger ones. They thoughtfully brought them into their games, adapted what they were doing and made sure everyone was having just as much fun as they were. They encouraged one another, supported each other through challenges and worked together to figure things out.
That is the kind of community we hope to build at The Discovery Den.
A place where kids can get muddy, get curious, take risks, learn new skills, make things, play hard and, most importantly, feel like they belong.
To all of the families who trusted us with your children this summer, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you for allowing us to spend these weeks exploring, learning, laughing and growing alongside your kids. We are so grateful for every family who has become part of our little Discovery Den community.
We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer, soak up these last few weeks of sunshine and adventure, and enjoy some well-earned downtime before fall begins.
And one last little favour.
If your family has enjoyed your time at The Discovery Den and you feel inclined, a Google review would mean so much to us. As a small but growing business, your reviews help other local families discover us and help us continue building this wonderful community.
Thank you for being part of it.
Until the next adventure,
The Discovery Den

One of the most fascinating things about children's play is how naturally it becomes science, engineering, problem-solving, and innovation when given the time and freedom to explore.
Over the past few weeks, our Discovery Den children have been completely captivated by a small woodland creek. What began as digging in the mud has evolved into an intricate water management system designed, tested, modified, and improved entirely by the children themselves.
Using recycled water bottles as funnels and filters, they have created four separate water-processing sections. As water flows through each stage, the children carefully observe how it moves, where it pools, and how changes to the channel affect the entire system downstream. They have even engineered overflow reservoirs and diversion channels to prevent flooding if a gate is forgotten or a section becomes blocked.
Without worksheets, lectures, or instructions, they are exploring:
- Water flow and hydrodynamics
- Cause and effect relationships
- Engineering design and redesign
- Filtration systems
- Gravity and elevation changes
- Problem-solving and critical thinking
- Environmental stewardship
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Persistence through trial and error
The most remarkable part is watching their process. They build, observe, predict, test, fail, redesign, and try again. Every puddle, collapsed wall, blocked channel, and overflowing reservoir becomes valuable information that guides their next decision.
This is authentic learning at its finest.
The creek changes every day because the children change it every day and the weather also has an impact. New ideas emerge, problems appear, solutions are invented, and understanding deepens. Hours pass while they remain fully engaged, discussing theories, negotiating plans, and celebrating discoveries. Hours of focus...on their own accord. It's such a beautiful thing to observe.
What looks like "just playing in the mud" is actually a rich investigation into how water shapes our world. These young engineers are learning that systems are interconnected, that every action has a consequence, and that the best way to understand something is often to get your hands dirty and experiment.
And perhaps most importantly, they are discovering the joy of curiosity.
At The Discovery Den, we believe some of the most powerful learning happens when children are given the space, time, and freedom to follow their questions wherever they lead. Sometimes, those questions lead to a muddy creek—and hours of meaningful discovery

Gone fishing for the day…
Trading screens for creek time and teaching the kids that sometimes the best way to reconnect… is to disconnect.
No notifications, no scrolling—just imagination, fresh air, and a whole lot of “did you catch anything yet?”
Honestly, it feels a lot like the days we grew up with.

Forest school is so much more than outdoor play.
It’s experiential learning in its most natural form—supporting executive function, emotional regulation, coordination, and critical thinking through real, meaningful experiences.
Kids aren’t just “playing”… they’re building the lifelong skills that can’t be taught from a desk.
For many of us, it feels like a return to the kind of childhood we grew up with—just with a deeper understanding of why it matters.
