Let’s talk at-home hoof maintenance 🐓

What’s common isn’t always normal when it comes to hoof health—and knowing the difference can change everything for your horse.

When you start to recognize early signs, subtle imbalances, and everyday patterns, you become an active part of your horse’s wellness team—not just an observer.

Sometimes when health issues happen more often, we fall into a space where we move them from common to normal. The hoof health challenges we see the most often with client cases include:

šŸ”¶Long toes and underrun heals ...and no, it's not a TB thing, we see plenty who are racing and showing with great feet šŸ˜‰

šŸ”¶dry & weak hoof capsules with cracks and chips ... Don't get us wrong, we love a great hoof conditioner BUT only after we know we have good hoof circulation & diet covered first.

šŸ”¶High low syndrome... There is the very rare case we meet that as a true limb length discrepancy where this may be the bodies way of adapting. But most cases just need some soft tissue bodywork, tack changes, better movement and regular rehab focused trim sessions.

šŸ”¶Flares and contracted heels ... Life happens to both the body and the hoof. Together they respond to environmental influences and show up as capsule distortions. It's our job to sort out what's causing them and help guide the body and hoof back to balance.

See something you're unsure about? Get curious. Chat with your farrier, vet team, bodyworker, nutritionist and saddle fittee about what you see.

Always keep learning. Your horse will thank you for it.

Because supporting healthy hooves isn’t just about today…

It’s about building a foundation for your horse’s future:

✨ Comfort
✨ Confidence
✨ Capability

Don't forget we have the Canadian Equine Hoof Care Association Whole Horse Soundness Conference coming up May 9-10th in Orangeville ON with some great speakers ready to help you learn more!

Comfort and performance don’t start with bigger strides or harder training—they start with proper tack fit.

When a saddle or bridle fits correctly, your horse can move the way their body was designed to. Shoulders are free, the back can lift, and the body can move in balance. That balance travels all the way down the limb, influencing how the hoof lands, loads, and leaves the ground.

When tack restricts movement, even subtly, it can create compensations through the back, limbs, and hooves. Over time, those small changes can affect posture, hoof mechanics, and overall soundness.

✨ Proper tack fit supports:
• Freer, more efficient movement
• Balanced loading through the limbs
• Healthier hoof mechanics
• A horse that feels comfortable and confident in their work

And when horses move well today, we help protect their future soundness and capability too.

Comfort → builds Confidence → which creates Capability.

If we want healthy hooves and bodies, we have to look at the whole system.

Hoof care isn’t static — and so our understanding and beliefs shouldn't be either.

Research is evolving. Materials are evolving. Our understanding of biomechanics, sensory input, and whole-horse soundness is evolving.

Whether you’re a horse owner, trimmer, farrier, bodyworker, or trainer — continuing education in hoof health management, trimming strategies, and shoeing options matters more than ever.

Because hoof balance isn’t just about the foot.
It influences:

• Limb loading
• Joint alignment
• Myofascial tension patterns
• Breakover timing
• Overall comfort and performance
Small changes in balance can create big changes in how a horse moves — and how much strain their body absorbs over time.

When we stay current on new research and options, we can:

āœ” Make more informed decisions
āœ” Support better alignment
āœ” Reduce compensation patterns
āœ” Help prevent balance-related injuries
āœ” Keep horses comfortable for the long term

Good hoof care is proactive — not reactive.

Our horses deserve professionals who are committed to learning, refining, and collaborating.

Because comfort starts from the ground up.
