I've been a high school teacher in Toronto for over 12 years. Early mornings, late nights marking papers, pouring everything into my students — it's exhausting work, but it's what I chose because I believed in making a difference.
2025 hit different. My salary barely keeps up with rent and groceries anymore. I'm watching younger teachers leave the profession entirely because they can't afford to stay in the city. Every month feels tighter, and I started thinking: I've given decades to this job — what do I actually have to show for it when I retire?
At some point I thought: I can't keep waiting and hoping things improve. I need to do something, even if it's small.
A colleague in the staff room mentioned an article about a government-supported investment platform built for working Canadians like us. She wasn't pushing it, just said it helped her breathe a little easier.
I put in $500 — honestly, it felt risky on a teacher's budget.
After 3 months, I earned $91,400. Not life-changing, but for the first time in years, I didn't feel like I was falling behind.
For the first time, I feel like maybe I'm building something for myself — not just grading papers until I'm 65.
