East York Learning Experience EYLE’s adult literacy, numeracy and digital literacy programs transform lives and enhance self-worth

Every day, EYLE helps adults who are overwhelmed by the challenges they face. They may be struggling to find work; they may dream of getting their high school equivalency and going to college. They may be caught in a low-level job that doesn’t reflect their true potential or, unable to read articles on basic health care, they may be struggling to cope with a manageable illness that threatens to cut their life short. Since our inception in 1987, we have provided help for individuals faced with limited to no possibilities in employment, education, or greater personal independence as they struggle with reading, writing, and grasping basic mathematical concepts. Our program provides free one-to-one tutoring for adults who seek to overcome the social and economic barriers associated with low literacy levels.

🍂📚 Welcome to October! 📚🍂

A new month is here, bringing cooler days, colourful leaves, cozy reading, and new opportunities to learn.

October can be a great time to slow down, settle into a routine, and make a little space for learning. Maybe that means picking up a book, practising a new digital skill, working on a personal goal, or learning something that can make everyday life a little easier.

At East York Learning Experience (EYLE), we believe learning happens at every age and at every pace. Whether you’re building your confidence with technology, improving your reading and writing skills, working toward a goal, or simply exploring something new, every step counts. 💛

Learning doesn’t have to happen all at once. A few minutes of reading, a little practice, or trying something new can add up to meaningful progress over time.

🍁 Here’s to a month of learning, growing, and celebrating the little steps along the way!

What’s your favourite way to settle into a fall learning routine?

🧡 🪶 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🪶 🧡

On September 30, we remember and honour the children who never came home from residential schools, Survivors, and their families and communities.

Wearing orange is one way to show support and remember the experiences of Indigenous children who were separated from their families, communities, cultures, and languages. Every Child Matters.

As an organization dedicated to adult learning and literacy, EYLE recognizes the importance of listening, learning, and making space for Indigenous languages, knowledge, and stories.

Today, we invite our community to take time to reflect, learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and listen to Indigenous voices as part of the ongoing journey toward truth and reconciliation.

💻 Digital Skill of the Week: Autofill 💻

Did you know your browser can help you complete online forms faster? The autofill feature saves commonly used information like your name, email, phone number, or address so it can automatically appear when you fill out forms online.

This can be especially helpful when completing:
• Job applications
• Online registrations
• Account sign-ups
• Service forms

Using autofill can save time, reduce typing errors, and make navigating online forms feel much easier. For many adult learners, learning simple digital tools like this helps build confidence and independence online.

At East York Learning Experience (EYLE), we help learners practice practical digital skills that support everyday tasks and workplace readiness.

💻 Digital Literacy Insight 💻

Digital skills are an essential part of everyday life. From applying for jobs and communicating by email to completing online forms and accessing important services, digital literacy helps adults participate fully in today’s world.

At East York Learning Experience (EYLE), we support adult learners in building confidence with practical, real-world digital tasks, including:
• Sending and organizing emails
• Navigating websites and online forms
• Using devices like smartphones and computers
• Practicing safe and responsible browsing

For many learners, gaining digital skills means more than learning technology — it means greater independence, stronger employment opportunities, and increased confidence when navigating online spaces.

Every new skill learned helps open the door to more opportunities.

📖 Literacy Tip: Use a Reading Guide 📖

A simple tool can make a big difference in reading comprehension and focus. Using a reading guide — such as a ruler, bookmark, or index card placed under the current line of text — can help readers maintain their place and stay engaged with the material.

This technique is especially helpful for adult learners who may feel overwhelmed by longer passages. By guiding the eye line by line, a reading guide can:
• Improve focus
• Reduce visual distractions
• Support reading fluency
• Build confidence with longer texts

At East York Learning Experience (EYLE), we encourage practical strategies that help learners strengthen foundational skills and approach reading with greater confidence. Small tools and techniques often make a meaningful difference in the learning journey.

Celebrating Skills for Success Day

Today, we recognize the importance of skills that empower adult learners to succeed — in the workplace, at home, and in their communities. Skills like reading, writing, problem solving, communication, and digital literacy are more than tools; they are pathways to confidence, opportunity, and independence.

At EYLE, our programs support adults in:
• Developing workplace literacy and communication skills
• Gaining confidence with digital tools and online navigation
• Applying problem-solving strategies in everyday life

Every skill learned strengthens individuals, families, and communities, and helps learners take meaningful steps toward their goals.

📖 Skills for Success: Reading 📖

Reading is more than just a skill — it’s a foundation for workplace success, lifelong learning, and independence. This fall, it’s the perfect time to focus on building stronger reading skills, whether for work, personal goals, or everyday life.

At EYLE, adult learners receive personalized, goal-driven tutoring that helps them:
✅ Understand and retain information more effectively

📚 Happy International Literacy Day! 📚

Literacy is more than reading and writing — it can open doors to opportunity, confidence, and greater participation in everyday life.

Today, we celebrate adult learners who are taking steps toward their goals, whether that means reading something new, filling out a digital form, improving their writing, or practicing skills for work.

At EYLE, we see the difference that learning can make every day:

✅ Building confidence in everyday tasks and employment
✅ Creating new opportunities for learning and personal growth
✅ Helping people feel more connected to their community

Every step forward matters. 💙

This year’s theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” reminds us that literacy helps people participate in their communities, navigate a changing world, and access new opportunities.

Across Canada, more than 60 organizations are coming together through the National Literacy Alliance to make literacy a stronger national priority and support literacy from early learning through adulthood. EYLE is proud to be part of a community working to make literacy more visible and accessible.

This International Literacy Day, we’re celebrating the dedication, courage, and persistence of adult learners — and everyone who helps make learning possible.

Learning is a lifelong journey. Every step forward counts. 🌱
