Poculi Ludique Societas

Poculi Ludique Societas celebrating 60 yrs of performance research & production of medieval & early modern drama. PLS has toured in Canada, the United States and Europe.

PLS (Poculi Ludique Societas) sponsors productions of early plays, from the beginnings of medieval drama to as late as the middle of the seventeenth century. The group had its origins in 1964-65 in a seminar on medieval drama conducted at the University of Toronto. For more than forty years, PLS has been associated with the university’s Centre For Medieval Studies, offering a regular schedule of plays every year. Now, as part of the Centre for Performance Studies in Early Theatre, PLS operates in affiliation with the Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance Studies. PLS also collaborates with the theatre history research project Records of Early English Drama (REED) at the University of Toronto.

We're casting for a new translation of Cornelis Everaert's banned 1530 play about currency devaluation, economic injustice, and the gap between what things cost and what they're worth.

Sound familiar?

This play was subversive in its own time, and it’s echoing in ours.

This is a non-union gig that comes with a stipend, and you’ll:
• Be part of the first-ever staging of this brand-new English translation by PLS scholarly advisor Charlotte Steenbrugge
• Perform on a historically-informed medieval wagon stage
• Explore allegorical characters with urgent modern subtext
• Work in a scholar-supported, ensemble-driven process
• Gain strong credit for your classical theatre portfolio

Performance dates: Oct 15–17, 2026
Audition dates: Sept 11 (2:15–5:15pm) & Sept 12 (11am–2pm)

Audition prep:
Prepare a short verse monologue from the 16th century or earlier (Shakespeare okay—earlier or non-English-origin texts welcome). Be ready to improvise and work physically.

Roles open (all ages/genders/backgrounds welcome):
🎭 Many People – The merchant everyman, carries the social critique
🎭 Poor Labourer – Vulnerable, resilient, physically grounded
🎭 Fluctuating Currency – Movement-heavy role, embodies instability itself
🎭 Rational Feeling – Charismatic defender of the status quo, sharp rhetoric
