Death Of Someone You Don’t Know
By: Jehangir Saleh
Written: February 7, 2005
No more pretending
Smoking on your front poach
That overlooks the street
Without streetlights
But the night will not hear your excuses
It is only dark
And will not comfort
Unless you answer
Tomorrow is the death
Of someone you don’t know
You feel sad
Always have
But didn’t until know
You came in from the dark
Looked at your wife sleeping
And began to cry
Quietly
For you knew
That someday
Someone will be you

It Has Occurred

As the sound of lapping waves
Stroke through each breath
And I press my forehead
To the ground
Waiting
Do not love me
Because I am dying,
Claiming to be alone
Love me
Because you are dying
And need a reminder
It Has Occurred
Can you pour me
Another.
It has occurred to me.
I might be paranoid.
Perhaps
This deserves some thought.
Can you.

Gesture at Bay & Bloor
By: Jehangir Saleh
Written: April 30, 2003
Easy to trip on
That man with rancid in his voice
A slop on the sidewalk
Hands and mouth shaking at passersby
Rasps of hair peeking out
From the holes in his hat
Which he tips towards me
While I wait for the light to change
For things to happen,
For progression
Leaving him behind with the pigeons
And other pedestrians
I imagine walking back
Shaking his callused
But firm hands
Sharing a cigarette
Becoming dirty from his wisdom
He is a great mound of man –
Like the one where they waited for Godot
It was not a rock
But a blanketed homeless man
That meant nothing and never will-
As tragic as a permanent suit stain
A leather briefcase jabs my side,
The well-dressed crowd hungers for green
And I begin to think of my future
As the light begins to change
