Late post but a great post.

On Sunday March 29 we had a team participate in the annual North York Open Tournament hosted by the Canadian Shiai Karate Association. We had 9 athletes in total, and came back with 10 medals. The level of competition was high which really motivated the team, and everyone enjoyed the challenge.

Congratulations to the Gold Tiger Karate team, it was a great experience and learning opportunity. Thank you again to our hosts for putting on this event.

At our dojo we have kata’s that are specific for Goju Ryu, and kata’s that are generally used in other karate dojo’s.

These general kata’s help connect the different styles of karate together, teaches the basic stances that you’ll see in all of the different styles, and are a great way to warm up.

What is conditioning good for?

A part of our conditioning is body tempering which helps with targeting, breathing, and getting used to receiving contact.

🥋 Knowing where to strike is super important, and knowing how to take that strike to certain parts of the body is even more important.

🥋 Being able to breath during stress is critical, and most of the time when we’re under stress we clench up and hold our breath. Focusing on breathing, and less on the contact being made allows for better adaptation when competing in a combat sport or in a self defense situation.

🥋 Getting used to receiving contact makes you tougher physically, and it trains your brain to know when the body has hit the pain threshold.

To land a hit you have to be able to take a hit, so body tempering has to be a part of conditioning.

Kata allows the practitioner to educate themselves physically and mentally.

🥋The physical aspect encourages you to strengthen your body outside of the general practice of calisthenics which is great for those that don’t feel inclined to go to a gym.

🥋The mental aspect encourages you to study and research the history of the kata, the movements, and compare and contrast it with other martial art systems.

🥋At our dojo we believe that the true meaning behind the training is the perfection of one’s character. Like Jigaro Kano sensei envisioned Judo as a practice of improving the physical and mental aspects of the practitioner for mutual prosperity, we see karate the same way.

➡️Join us to gain the benefits of karate, and see the improvement in your life and those around you.

Great class today led by Sensei Barton as our guest instructor, with our good friends from in the house as well.

A lot of technical details regarding the kata's and how the movements translate to actual combative situations. Arm locks, sweeps and throws were just a few of the things we got to work on. Ending with some jujitsu basics to add to our practice was a great bonus.

Thank you again to Sensei Barton, and additional thanks to Sensei Knipsel, Sensei Smith and Senpai Spano for joining in on a great session.

Happy world karate day 🥳 🥋

In celebration of this day it's customary to practice your kata's as many times as possible. How many kata's do you know and how many times did you get to practice them today?
