To end of the academic year we had a very special guest - veteran of russia’s war on Ukraine Shaun Pinner. From his powerful talk, we heard first-hand accounts about russia’s inhumane treatment of Prisoners of War, heard about dealing with PTSD in Ukraine, and how powerful russian disinformation is in the world.
Special thanks to Jeannie Clark for making this amazing event possible!
Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our semester ending event! We hope to see you all soon 😊

Запрошуємо всіх небайдужих!
We are proud to announce that our club will have the privilege to host Shaun Pinner, a man who encapsulates Ukraine’s ongoing fight for freedom. Faced with unspeakable hardships and life-or-death situations, he has never given up and is here to proudly share his story from the horrors of Mariupoľ.
Join us for a profound conversation about the realities of war.
Priority will be given to UofT students.

4 роки повномасштабної війни. 4 years of full-scale war.
Ukrainians have endured and withstood over 1460 days of russia’s onslaught, surviving without electricity, without heat, without running water, but still persisting. As Ukrainians in Canada, it is our duty not only to support, but to act. Our club has persistently and actively raised awareness about the war at the academic level, organizing and attending events led by preeminent scholars, like Marci Shore and Timothy Snyder; but we have also strived hard to send real, monetary aid to our brethren on the front line who do the real work.
We are honoured today to show something we are deeply proud of - a signed flag from the 3rd assault brigade, with whom we have been working.
As the war continues, so does our work!
Дякуємо хлопцям 3-ої ОШБр та всім захисникам та захисницям нашої неньки України.
Слава Україні!
Героям Слава!

In the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the film director Ganna and her family escape and find refuge in Poland. There, they meet Kaja and her family. The deep bond the two mothers develop helps Ganna to confront trauma, loss, and the horrors of war.
Filmed in Mława, Poland, and Zabuchchia, Ukraine, Mama’s Voice is an intimate portrait of a Ukrainian family torn apart during the early months of the Russian invasion. Told through the lens of a refugee, the film captures the daily realities faced by Ukrainian women and children seeking safety in Poland. It is a heartfelt story of women’s friendship forged in the backdrop of war — a powerful narrative of resilience, displacement, and the transformative power of art in times of crisis.
Produced by CEES alumna Larysa Iarovenko, Mama’s Voice received the Honourable Mention Award for its powerful coverage of the impact of the war on the people of Ukraine at the LA Femme International Film Festival in Los Angeles, USA, in October 2025.
