The eight North American martyrs, also known as the Canadian Martyrs, the Jesuit Martyrs of North America or the Martyrs of France, included six priests and two lay brothers. They were heroic members of the Society of Jesus who were martyred in North America as they served the Huron, the Iroquois and the Mohawk First Nations people.

Five of the eight North American martyrs were put to death in what is now Canada, and three of them in New York State. There is a shrine to the United States' martyrs at Auriesville in New York, and there is a shrine to the Canadian martyrs at Fort Saint Mary near Midland, Ontario.

The names of the eight North American martyrs are:
- Saint Rene Goupil, a lay brother martyred in 1642 in New York State,
- Saint Isaac Jogues, a priest, martyred in 1646 in New York State,

Matthew is also known in the New Testament as Levi. He was on of the twelve apostles of Jesus. The first Gospel to appear in the New Testament is attributed to him; thus, Matthew is one of the four Evangelists.

Among the early followers and apostles of Jesus, Matthew is mentioned in Matthew 9:9 and Matthew 10:3 as a tax collector who, while at work in Capernaum, was called to follow Jesus. Matthew was a learned man, and so he is often pictured carrying an open book.

Later Church fathers such as Irenaeus and Clement of Alexandria claim that Matthew preached the Gospel to the Jewish community in Judea, before going to other countries. The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church each hold the tradition that Matthew died as a martyr.

St. Matthew is the patron of accountants and bankers.

----------------------------

One of their greatest treasures in Canada is without a doubt Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, the largest shrine in the world dedicated to Saint Joseph. In 1904, Saint Brother André, a remarkable religious who was canonized by the in 2010, built a small chapel. That seed bore fruit, and today about twenty religious, assisted by a large number of collaborators, welcome more than two million visitors each year to this unique place of prayer.

The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since at least the sixth century. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8.

Scripture does not give an account of ’s birth. However, the apocryphal Protoevangelium of James fills in the gap. This work has no historical value, but it does reflect the development of Christian . According to this account, Anna and Joachim are infertile but pray for a child. They receive the promise of a child who will advance God’s plan of salvation for the world. Such a story, like many biblical counterparts, stresses the special presence of God in Mary’s life from the beginning. (from www.franciscanmedia.org)

---------------------------

Catholic Social Teaching holds that work is dignified and an intrinsic good, and workers must always be respected and valued.

Jesus became “like us in all things, devoted most of the years of his life on earth to manual work at the carpenter’s bench” St John Paul II – Laborem Exercens, On Human Work [The state] “has also the duty to protect the rights of all its people, and particularly of its weaker members, the workers, women and children. It can never be right for the State to shirk its obligation of working actively for the betterment of the condition of the workingman.”

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, the future Mother Teresa, was born on 26 August 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia, to a family of Albanian heritage. In 1928, she entered the Loreto Sisters in Dublin, Ireland. The next year she was missioned to India as a teacher.

On 10 September 1946, on a train journey from Calcutta to Darjeeling, Mother Teresa received what she termed the "call within a call," which was to give rise to the Missionaries of Charity family of Sisters, Brothers, Fathers, and Co-Workers. On October 7, 1950, the new congregation of the Missionaries of Charity was officially erected as a religious institute for the Archdiocese of Calcutta. Their purpose was "to quench the infinite thirst of Jesus on the cross for love and souls" by "labouring at the salvation and sanctification of the poorest of the poor."

Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 in Calcutta. She was canonised on 4 September 2016, and the anniversary of her death (5 September) is her feast day. We pray for the Missionaries of Charity, for the work they do among the poorest of the poor, and for vocations to their way of life.

From September 1 (the Day of Prayer for Creation) to October 4 (the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi), Christians around the world respond to Pope Francis’ and now Pope Leo’s invitation to pray, work, advocate and care for our common home. You can find information and resources online at seasonofcreation.org.

The theme for Season of Creation this year is Living Water. The Biblical text for this year is drawn from Ezekiel 47: 1- 12, which portrays God’s life-giving water flowing from the temple of God. The river grows deeper and deeper restoring barren land, reviving waters, and sustaining flourishing ecosystems. The vision invites human responsibility: recognizing ecological damage, embracing interconnectedness, we are called to immerse ourselves in the water, and actively safeguarding and working for the renewal of creation so that environmental healing and human well-being may flourish together.

The call is for transformation – that Christians would be immersed in the living water flowing from the throne of God- stepping in deeper and deeper, inspired by the Spirit of God, working together for the renewal of Creation.

08/28/2026

St. Augustine of Hippo (354–430 AD) is one of the most significant figures in Western Christianity and philosophy. He is primarily known as the author of the first Western spiritual autobiography (Confessions), a foundational architect of Christian theology, and the creator of the influential philosophy of the "two cities" (The City of God).

His famous spiritual autobiography honestly details his turbulent youth, sinful struggles, and ultimate conversion to Christianity. It famously features the quote, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in You, O Lord." Known as the Doctor Gratiae (Doctor of Grace), he deeply influenced Western views on the necessity of unmerited divine grace for salvation and the concept of original sin.

Although he experienced many hardships in his life, Saint Augustine set an example for men and women around the world to follow. His work is reflected in the lives of Catholics in the Augustinian tradition who continue to care for those in great need. Pope Leo XIV is a member of the Augustinians.

------------------------

Saint Augustin d’Hippone (354-430 apr.
