NPR and PBS have won a significant court ruling against an executive order aimed at cutting them off from federal funding.
Judge Randolph Moss permanently barred federal agencies from carrying out President Donald Trump’s directive to stop funding the two public broadcasters. The court concluded that the government could not use funding decisions to penalize NPR and PBS merely because the president objected to their editorial content.
The administration had defended the order by arguing that federal officials may decide what speech taxpayer-supported programs should fund. Moss concluded that the First Amendment placed limits on that authority when funding decisions were tied directly to disfavored speech.

There is an important distinction, however: Congress separately approved a reduction of about $1.1 billion in public-broadcasting funding before this ruling. The court decision addresses the president’s executive order, not Congress’s independent budget authority.

The White House strongly disagreed with the decision and criticized the ruling.
The case therefore centers not simply on public broadcasting, but on a broader principle: whether the federal government can withdraw funding from particular media organizations because of disagreement with their reporting.
